Australian first, All-Abilities Football Netball League to play opening round on GMHBA Stadium

Kardinia Park Stadium Trust has also been revealed as a major supporter of the AFL Barwon All Abilities Football Netball League in 2023.

Placing our region front and centre, The AFL Barwon Region will be hosting an Australian-first, All-Abilities Football Netball League in 2023.

Adding further diversity and community opportunities to play both sports in Barwon region, the inaugural season of the Football and Netball League will kick off on Saturday April 29th with a double-header on GMHBA Stadium in a major coup for the competition.

Stay up to date with what’s happening in and around the region here.

The opening round matches will kick off at 4pm and 6pm, with an All Abilities Auskick session between the games.

This will provide the opportunity for players who have never played a competitive game of football before, to start their career off at the Barwon Region’s Premier sports precinct.

The competition is set to run until August 12 and will commence its inaugural season with four Clubs – Bell Park FNC, Geelong West Giants FNC, Newcomb FNC & St Joseph’s FNC, fielding Football teams. The currently established All-Abilities Netball competition will be aligned to new league.

The football will take place fortnightly with each participating club hosting the competition. The current netball competition will also look to move to a club-based operation on a weekly basis.

“The development of the AFL Barwon All Abilities Football Netball League is a culmination of tireless enthusiasm and resourcing, across several groups of dedicated individuals to make this League, a reality,” says AFL Barwon Region General Manager Edward Wilson.

“AFL Barwon acknowledges the opportunity this League will provide to the local community and is grateful for the expertise of Leisure Networks, and the four inaugural Clubs, in partnership, to drive our vision and strategy”.

“All aspects of League administration, competition and operational management have been devised with the participant and participation in mind. We believe the future of the League requires foundations that AFL Barwon and Clubs alike can build from, and we’re proud of what we’ve collectively achieved”.
