Aussie punk legends The Meanies announce Geelong show for September

Melbourne’s renowned punk rockers The Meanies are returning to the sweaty, beer-splattered stage at the Barwon Club Hotel in Geelong this September in celebration of a new 7" single and ahead of a tour of Spain.

Earning a reputation as one of the country’s most pre-eminent underground rock acts with their raucous live shows in the ’90s, the legendary punks are also set to perform shows in Adelaide in August and Melbourne in September, making three very special shows for the band.

Stay up to date with all the epic events happening in and around the region here.

Local indie Fantastic Mess Records will be releasing the new single “Old Car To Shangri-La”, which is taken from the Meanies’ latest album Desperate Measures. Released in 2020, this was the first album from the band in five years, coming after 2015’s seminal It’s Not Me, It’s You, which in itself was the band’s first record since 1994.

The single, ‘Old Car To Shangri-La’, is coming in September and is the sixth in the series of singles (which began in 2008!) featuring Meanies A sides and Meanies covers on the B sides. The B side of this one features Chinese Burns Unit and the Hellebores doing “The Meanie Twist” and “Lyin'” respectively. The single will feature a wild sleeve from Glenno Smith and will be available in three initial colours (black/aqua-marine/translucent red – each in a hand-numbered limited edition of 100 copies) with an insert and sticker.

The single can be pre-ordered directly from Fantastic Mess Records here.

The band will precede the single with a show on Saturday 27 August at Enigma Bar, Adelaide with guests Cull The Band and Bitchspawn; one in Melbourne on Thursday 22 September at the Brunswick Ballroom with guests Rot TV + Money For Rope; and one in Geelong on Friday 23 September at the Barwon Club with guests Rot TV and Sacramento Sweaters.

Following that, the Meanies head to Spain for three weeks of shows in late October and November; primarily headliners but also shows with Los Chicos, Daddy Longlegs, Discipulos de Dionisos and a festival called Funtastic.

The tour will cap an eventful year for the Meanies which has seen them finally complete their much delayed Desperate Measures tour and also play with the Foo Fighters in Geelong.
