All Things Considered

The Torquay Theatre Troupe’s tagline on the website reads “Making quality theatre accessible to our local community” and that’s exactly what the troupe are doing in the theatre’s latest play written by Ben Brown, All Things Considered.

Produced in 1996 the play is a black comedy that follows philosophy professor David Freeman, who has well thought out his decision to “call it a day”. And the story starts with David attempting to do just that.

“It’s funny, it’s an interesting play from a philosophical and meaningful point of view. I think it addresses people’s opinion on death and I think it challenges their pre-conceptions on what it is, not necessarily to be human, but why we’re here,” director Michael Baker says of the play.

“What’s the purpose of life and why should we have the right to be here? Who is to say what is correct for somebody else? I think the play explores these themes through the various characters and the characters are representative of various points of view of how most of society might value life. The character of David represents a very bleak, or stark and contrasting view to the majority of people’s views of what it is to be alive.”

While delivered with a side of laughter, the play raises many questions about suicide and exactly where the decision lies in deciding to end a life.

“I think it leaves the theatre goer with those questions in their mind. It’s not answered. It’s answered partially but there’s no conclusion and the audience is allowed to walk out and say, ‘Well what about that argument?’” he says.

What makes this important discussion even greater, is that it’s delivered by such a strong community of creatives in the Torquay Theatre Troupe. Having been around for more than a decade opening the town up to quality plays, the troupe simply their craft, and creates it in the most inclusive way possible.

“Our view has always been if you want to be involved, by all means come get involved,” Michael says.

With such passion behind the curtain, it’s only natural that drive for what they do will translate on stage, and it’s certainly something to seen in action. Currently in rehearsals for the show, things are all coming together and will kick off on May 19.
