All aboard, Geelong’s highly-anticipated cheese train has announced an opening date

Australia's only cheese train is opening in January 2022 with all-you-can-eat cheese sessions for the entire month.

Since announcing its plans for opening back in February this year, we (and we assume the lot of you) have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Geelong’s cheese train bar/restaurant – and now we’ve finally been gifted an opening date.

In case you managed to miss the glorious news, a new late-night ‘cheese worshipping’ restaurant and bar will soon open on Pakington Street, and it’s going to become home to Australia’s very first ‘cheese train’.

Now open: Geelong’s cheese bar Splatters opens, complete with cheese train, cocktails and Garden of Edam

Spawned by Geelong local business Splatters, one of our favourite online grazing stores, the fromagerie worshipping venue will see the purveyors of cheese officially open the fully-licensed restaurant boasting a conveyor belt of cheeses on Wednesday, January 12 2022.

Lock that date in people!

The key takeaways

  • Geelong’s new Cheese Train has announced an opening date for the Australian-first
  • The venue is opening in January 2022 with all-you-can-eat cheese sessions for the entire month.
  • Tickets will go on sale Tuesday, December 14.

Transforming the former pharmacy on Pakington Street into an immaculately styled venue that will help locals indulge in the world of Brie, blue, and burrata in a thriving and central location, the ‘Splatters Cheese Bar’ has been under construction for the past few months, with the business experiencing a number of delays due to the recurring lockdowns in Victoria.

Now sporting a bright yellow sign, yellow couches and bar stools, a central bar and an epic conveyor belt, the venue will see punters taking a seat bar side for them to gaze longingly into the perpetually rotating belt of cheesy goodness. Like a sushi train, cheese lovers will be able to take their pick from a tonne of delicious cheese varieties offering a premiere grazing experience like no other.

With tap beer, wine, spirits, exposed brick walls, cheese grater pendant lights (amazing we know) and an abundance of restaurant seating, the venue is kicking off opening celebrations with their first special – So You Think You Can Cheese. For $79 per person, you’ll have 90 minutes to eat as many plates of cheese, mouth-watering charcuterie and accompaniments as you can, served direct from the cheese train. There will be more than 75 different combinations to choose from – and yes, there will be vegan cheese on offer!

Sessions to ‘cheese your own adventure’ kick off on Wednesday, January 12 2022. Wednesday and Thursday sessions can be booked from 4pm through to 8pm, while Friday, Saturday and Sunday can be booked from 12pm right up until 10pm (Sundays until 8pm).

This opening special will run until Sunday, January 30 2022.

While it’s huge news for Geelong’s foodie scene, it’s also a pretty big deal across Australia, with the cheese-train aspect being a nation’s first. It’s reported that the first venue in the world with a ‘sushi train’ dedicated exclusively to cheese opened in London in 2019.

We’re pretty much on board with anything dedicated to the fromagerie, but a cheese train? We’ve literally died and gone to heaven.
