Castlemaine's community radio station is bringing the much loved MAIN Game back.

An event like no other this side of the Great Divide, the MAIN Game returns to Castlemaine on Sunday 12 June after a forced two-year hiatus.

A community engagement and major fundraising initiative for local radio station 94.9 MainFM, the day features a game of Aussie rules footy between the Radio Galahs and the Rockatoos at the historic Camp Reserve.

If you’re unfamiliar, 94.9 MainFM is a not-for-profit radio station local to Castlemaine and the Mount Alexander community and accessible from anywhere in the world through its Livestream. Boasting an impressive array of diversity across music, news and local information, the programs are presented by volunteers with a passion for radio which serve the local community and beyond.

For the highly-anticipated game, the teams are made up of MainFM presenters, local musicians, and other respectable members of the community of mixed ages, all genders, and mixed abilities.

“The event has a real community focus which is a huge part of its appeal – it’s family-friendly, dog friendly and there’s always a few surprises in store,” said Sue McLennan, Sponsorship & Events Manager at MainFM.

“We’re hoping the MAIN Game will help raise awareness and garner interest in the radio station as a lead up to our annual subscriber drive, Radiothon, which begins on June 17.”

Event-goers can expect a seriously fun game of footy alongside some great live and local entertainment from the Castlemaine Highland Pipe Band, rockers K5 and dance troupe Lady Fun Times, plus food stalls and the MAIN Bar as well as a handball competition at halftime.

The MainFM van will be broadcasting live from the event for those listening at home, with MainFM’s own entertaining and unique commentary team bringing listeners all the action from on the ground.

“Footy brings people together,” said Ms McLennan, “and it’s an integral part of Victoria’s culture, and Castlemaine has a long history as a hub of footy activity with the Castlemaine Football Netball Club being one of Australia’s oldest and proudest sporting clubs in Australia.”

And with the training schedule drawing to a close, the volunteer coaching staff has risen to the challenge.

“Our training sessions have been about building camaraderie, fitness, and social connections, which are the reasons many have chosen to play. It should make for a really fun game of footy and a great day out for the community,” said coach Lainie Sutton.

Gates will open at midday, with entertainment starting at 12:30pm. Game starts at 1:30pm.

MainFM’s Footy Match goes down on Sunday 12 June at Camp Reserve, Castlemaine from 12 midday – 4:30pm. $5 for MainFM subscribers, $10 general entry, free for kids under 18.
