SIX The Musical is an ultra-modern remixed take on the stories of Henry VIII's six wives and it's coming to Melbourne's Comedy Theatre from June 17.

Described as a ‘pop-fueled musical packed full of sass’, SIX remixes the history of the six wives of Henry VIII – Britain’s notorious Tudor King – in a modern retelling from the perspectives of Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anna of Cleves, Katherine Howard and Catherine Parr.

Henry VIII is perhaps the most notorious monarch in English history, as his desire to divorce Catherine of Aragon – outlawed by the catholic church – caused him to renounce papal authority, initiate the English reformation, and form the Church of England.

The key takeaways

  • SIX The Musical’s Melbourne season will run at the Comedy Theatre from 17 June.

As you might guess, the five-time Olivier Award nominee musical is tongue-in-cheek but brimming with social commentary.

It began life as a student production at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and has since morphed into a West End and Broadway hit. The musical’s studio album has amassed more than 450 million streams and 3 billion views on TikTok.

Catherine of Aragon is played by Phoenix Jackson Mendoza (Green Day’s American Idiot, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), Anne Boleyn is played by Kala Gare, Loren Hunter (Strictly Ballroom, King Kong) takes on the role of the loyal third wife Jane Seymour, Anna of Cleves is played by Kiana Daniele (Boy from Oz, Dirty Dancing), Chelsea Dawson (Shrek the Musical) takes on the role of the playful fifth wife, Katherine Howard, and Vidya Makan (Green Day’s American Idiot) plays the empowering Catherine Parr.

Part musical, part pop concert, part history lesson, creators Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss acknowledge their Queen inspirations are some of the great pop performers today including Beyonce, Lily Allen, Sia, Adele, Ariana Grande, Britney Spears, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna and Alicia Keys – so you know it’s going to be fierce!
