A Victorian pizza has been named Australia’s Best at the World Pizza Championships in Italy

More than 750 pizzaiolos from around the world entered the competition, and the head chef at Ms Peacock in Victoria took home the Australian prize.

With more than 750 pizzaiolos from around the world competing over three days at the World Pizza Championships in Italy, it’s a pretty impressive accomplishment to come home with a title.

Well, Gagan Bhatnagar, the head chef at Ms Peacock, a restaurant within the charming Eynesbury Homestead, has taken home the prize for Australia’s best pizza.

Keep up with the latest food and booze news across the region here.

That’s right, a Victorian chef, slinging pizzas merely an hour down the road from here, has taken out the title of best pizza in Australia. Never mind an 18-hour flight, now you can just jump in the car to taste the best of the best.

The chef also came in 13th place in the world which is not bloody bad at all.

Bhatnagar has more than 22 years of culinary experience from around the world, but the last few years has seen him practising his epic pizza-making skills – and clearly, all the hard work has paid off.

Perfecting the classic style of pizza, Bhatnagar specialises in Pizza Napoletana featuring no fat in the dough, lots of water to make it wet and sticky which results in a wonderful, gooey soft centre which is boarded by a tall, fluffy crust or ‘cornicione’.

As for which pizza earned him the crown, that’s the Prosciutto De San Daniele according to their website, which features San Marzano Tomato Sugo, San Danialle Ham, fior de latte cheese, stracciatella cheese and cherry tomatoes, Bhatnagar was the highest ranked Australian in the classic pizza category.

If you’re keen to taste the award-winning pizza, you can make a booking for Ms Peacock through the website. There’s currently a pretty splendid winter festival going on at the moment in Eynesbury if you needed more of an excuse to hit the road.

A winter wonderland is popping up just out of Geelong with ice skating, pop up igloos and a Winter Solstice
