A tribute night for Chris Cornell is set to be hosted by the Barwon Club in June

May 18 marked the loss of a music icon and inspiration to many in the passing of Soundgarden lead singer, Chris Cornell.

Cornell was also known for his solo project, Audioslave and Temple of the Dog, and as a result arguably become the voice of a generation with his work spanning through the ’90s, noughties and to present day.

In honor of his legacy, the Barwon Club is hosting a tribute and thank you to the musician. Held on June 18 the event sees a massive round up of local (and not so local) musicians contribute to his legacy and farewell one of the most iconic voices in music.

The event is part thank you and part tribute to the incredible things Chris Cornell did for the music industry. It also doubles as an awareness raiser and fundraiser for beyondblue and Impact SRC.

beyondblue has been operating for 17 years and works in providing information and support to the three million Australians living with anxiety or depression, and assists in helping them achieve their best mental health possible, whatever their age or location. The organisation was placed in the top three for Australia’s most innovative not-for-profits this year, by the 2017 Innovation Index.

As well as having a calling service open 24/7 (which can be reached on 1300 22 4636) beyondblue has an online chat site, discussion threads started by the public, online resources and is involved in various events further raising awareness about mental health in Australia.

IMPACT SRC stands for the centre for Innovation in Mental and Physical Health and Clinical Treatment and it’s based right at Barwon Health in Geelong. Essentially the centre focuses on chronic disease patterns, risk factors and novel therapies for psychiatric, musculoskeletal and metabolic disorders, including the link between physical and mental health. It’s thoroughly important research, and even greater to see such a thing based in Geelong.

“We are working on developing treatments, particularly through use of the naturally occurring amino acid N-acetyl cysteine, that are beginning to be used globally to help people with a range of psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression,” director of IMPACT and professor Michael Berk says on the website.

With the event celebrating such a talented musician and helping two amazing causes, it’s really no wonder so many people in the music industry have put their hand up to support on the night (see the following list).
