A Moorabool-based winery is hosting a fiery ‘burning of the canes’ bonfire event this winter

This ritual celebrates the end of the grape harvest and the start of the new season’s bud-burst, with grapevine cuttings burnt in bonfires to symbolize rebirth.

An ancient pagan ritual will take place at a beloved local winery in Sutherlands Creek this winter.

‘The Burning of the Canes’ at Austin’s Wine will see a giant bonfire light up the 1500 sprawling acre property as part of an exciting annual ritual.

Moorabool Valley wineries to visit at least once in your life

Austin’s grows and produces single-vineyard, premium wines, and is owned and operated by second-generation family members, Scott and Belinda Austin. Harnessing 30 years of Austin’s winemaking history, they are driven to reshape the ‘typical’ Australian fine wine occasion into a vibrant, exploratory and welcoming experience. Crafting Pinot Noir for the people, and Riesling, Chardonnay and Shiraz to be seriously shared, you’ll find something you love across their two labels Austin’s and 6Ft6.

Resurrecting a tradition drawn from the vineyards of France, the ‘Burning of the Canes’ takes place at Austin’s every year, calling for a prosperous year ahead. The ritual involves burning last year’s crop remains and welcoming the new season and new year’s growth.

This will be the first year that the ritual has been made open to the public with the winery asking the community to join in the tradition, watching the flames of a bonfire engulf last year’s cane.

Taking place on Saturday, August 6, the night turns into a celebration with live music, a feast of food, and award-winning wines.

The team from Nama Please will be cooking outside with fire, while renowned DJ Edd Fisher who has previously played Golden Plains Festival, Potato Head Bali and Dark Mofo (to name a few) will be setting the mood and bringing the fiery vibes with a five hour set.

The Austin’s team will be keeping you warm with mulled wine, Pinot Noir Gin, plenty of fabulous vino’s, the bonfire of canes and their famous fire pits.

Running from 5pm through t0 10pm, tickets are $75 and include food cooked over fire by Nama, glass of wine on arrival and entertainment. Due to the open fire nature of this event, this event is for people 18+ only. Bus transfers from Geelong are available.

Put on a pair of boots, a big jacket, your beanie and grab a wine, and get ready for an unmissable event.

The Burning of the Canes goes down at 870 Steiglitz Rd, Sutherlands Creek on Saturday, August 6. You can view the facebook event here and you can purchase tickets to the event here
