The Melbourne Demons and the Western Bulldogs are one win from glory, with the two Victorian sides to face off in the 2021 Toyota AFL Grand Final at Optus Stadium.
With Footy Finals fever in full swing, die-hard Melbourne Demons fan and artist Lucy Simms has paid tribute to Captain Max Gawn by painting a life-size mural of him in Queenscliff, which has also being made available to purchase as a print.
The 2.08m mural has been painted by Point Lonsdale local and is located at QT on Hesse St, the Main Street of Queenscliff, and celebrates the star skipper who was the man of the moment as the Demons defeated the Cats in an 83-point drubbing. Gawn, who was in red-hot form, booted five goals against the Cats, sending fans into overdrive as the team secured its place in this weeks grand final.

Lucy’s passion for sport, elite athletes and her beloved Demons was the inspiration behind the mural and has been created to what she says would be a “dream-come-true win”, in the 2021 AFL Grand Final. She’s of course referring to the Demons’ long premiership drought, where they haven’t won a flag since 1964 – the longest current drought in the AFL.
“This moment has taken 52 years to become a reality and I, like so many other supporters, are desperately hoping for a fairytale Demons win,” she says.
“I will have everything crossed on Saturday and so does my entire family,” says Lucy an avid Demons fan and accomplished artist.
Forever evolving, Lucy has established herself as an artist whose works ranges from rough and rustic sketch watercolours to hairpin detailed acrylic labours of love. Hailing from Point Lonsdale, Lucy’s art journey has ebbed and flowed over the years. However, a recent stint whilst living in Noosa provided inspiration for new learnings, new mediums and freedom to create without any of life’s pressures.
Lucy’s art has grown and changed as she has in her personal life, yet a constant has remained, that is all her pieces are inspired by things that she loves. You will tend to see these recurring themes through her pieces; the ocean, sport, athletes, coffee, pop stars and animals. Her works typically evolve from photographs taken by herself or others, each growing into its own form; experimentation striving for the perfect combination of colour, pop and scale.
Clearly inspired by the Demons story and all it has encompassed over the years, Lucy also continues to give back to her community by donating all proceeds from the sale of the Max Gawn prints to FightMND, Neale Daniher’s motor neurone charity.
“I love the FightMND charity and everything they stand for, Neale Daniher is a true inspiration to the entire team and in particular to Max,” added Lucy.
