A Geelong pioneer in punk, Dez Dare, drops new album, single and video with a punch

words by Frankie Anderson-Byrne

We know you've all been wondering "What if Dez could fly around and explode people with laser eyes? Well here is your answer.

The local legend, who grew up in Geelong where he became involved in the local punk and rock scene in 1990 and shared stages with the likes of 5678s, Cosmic Psychos, Fugazi, The Dirty Three and the Hard-ons, before shifting his focus to running record labels, has released his fifth album ‘CHERYL! Your Love Shines Down Like A supernova’s Death’.

Dez Dare

Along with that, he’s dropped the second single “Talk, Clown”, complete with a quirky new video that might just answer the question no one was asking…

So what’s “Talk, Clown” all about? Dez says it’s about those frustrating people who just can’t stop talking—loudly. “Just coz you talk a lot and loudly, doesn’t make you right or smart,” he quips. “You best have a getaway plan for these exact people.” It’s an anthem for anyone who’s ever been stuck in a conversation with that one person who thinks their volume equals intelligence.

As for the video? Let’s just say it’s as bizarre and funny as you’d expect. “What would it look like if Dez Dare flew around exploding people with laser eyes?” Well, you’re about to find out—whether you wanted to or not. But let’s be real: who wouldn’t want to see that?

This album isn’t just another rock record. Dez has always been known for mixing weird, punky, electronic, and psychedelic sounds in a way that makes you scratch your head and nod along at the same time.

This time around, Dez has brought in Laura Loriga on backing vocals and Jonny Halifax on group vocals and lap steel, giving his trademark sound a fresh, new spin while still keeping that gritty, oddball vibe. Expect quirky melodies, synth leads, guitar riffs, big beats, and sing-along choruses that might just make you want to dance in the corner of your living room all day and night—whether you’re ready to get weird or not.

What’s Next for Dez Dare?

With the new album set to drop, Dez is already gearing up for what’s next in his musical evolution. And while he’s always been known for pushing boundaries, it’s clear that ‘CHERYL!’ is the next step in his long and storied journey—one that started all the way back in Geelong and has since taken him to Brighton, UK, and beyond.

So, if you’ve got a taste for quirky, genre-bending rock that’s not afraid to get loud and weird, Dez Dare’s latest album and single are the perfect soundtrack for your next dance party (or solo laser-eye explosion moment). Don’t sleep on it—Dez is back, and he’s making noise.
