A Geelong gym is running a food and supply drive for locals affected by Victoria’s lockdowns

Strong Geelong is lifting community spirits as lockdown continues.

It’s hard not to feel helpless, scared and sad right now, mostly for all the local businesses that are struggling to stay afloat and individuals struggling to put food on the table now that Geelong is back in another lockdown.

Since the return to lockdown, the state has seen a growing number of Victorians are turning to aid organisations for help to meet basic needs, and while charity volunteer numbers have fallen during the pandemic, demand for services has certainly risen.

While many charities face uncertainty over their funding, one of Geelong most loved gyms is doing what they do best and is helping lift the community up by running a food and supplies drive for people financially impacted by the Victorian lockdown.

The key takeaways

  • Strong Geelong are running a food and supplies drive for people financially impacted by lockdowns
  • The food and supplies drive encourages people to either donate or collect food from the Geelong location
  • All food or items not collected will be donated to food bank

Ran by Tyson Morrissy in the heart of Geelong, Strong Geelong has built a welcoming hub for strength enthusiasts with a culture and atmosphere second to none.

While usually focusing on strength training, the gym is extending their strength to develop their own way to support those in need of food and other essentials during this period, teaming up with Melbourne Community Supplies to bring a mini-hub to Geelong for the second time.

Going down this Wednesday, September 22, the food and supplies drive encourages people to either donate or collect food from the Geelong location.

“This is for everyone and anyone in our local community who are in need of supplies due to the impact of continuous lockdowns,” the gym said via socials.

“After such success in both collecting food from the community and being able to distribute it to SO many people in need. We’re at it again thanks to another snap lockdown and our awareness of what that does to people in need, families and people who lose more work.

“Our local food banks are currently over run by the influx of people that need help right now, so if you’re struggling to get to a food bank or are having trouble getting assistance, please come see us.”

Donations open from 9am to 11am, while collection will run from 11:30am to 1:30pm at Strong Geelong’s located at 14 Crown Street, South Geelong.

Items to donate and collect include Oats/cereals, long life milk, coffee and tea, pasta/rice/bread, spreads (Jams Vegemite, peanut butter), toilet paper, dried fruit and nuts, shampoo and conditioner, deodorant, fem hygiene products, toothbrushes and toothpaste, biscuits and muesli bars, canned foods such as soup, fruit and beans, nappies and all other non-perishable items.

“It’s 100% judgement free, we’re here to help and understand the strain caused by the pandemic.

“We want to make it as comfortable as possible for people to get help, sometimes we all need it in one way or another.”

All food or items not collected will be donated to food bank.

Melbourne Community Supplies is a community organisation focused on curating community locations for food and supplies drives within the 10km radius, with this being the first location where you can donate, as well as where anyone who needs to can pick up supplies.

Hailed as a community effort, MCS welcome anyone and everyone who needs a little extra help getting through this lockdown.

“If we all do our bit, we will make this lockdown a little easier for the thousands of people who don’t know if they will be able to put food on their plates this week.”
