A free pop-up outdoor cinema is coming to the city with some absolute Christmas classics

Get festive at Carlton Christmas Cinema.

Christmas songs are great, and wrapping Christmas gifts is a surefire way to get you in high spirits—but those joyful activities just can’t beat a Christmas movie!

Thanks to the good folk at City of Melbourne, you can enjoy a different holiday movie every Saturday right up until Christmas with the upcoming Christmas Cinema.

Keep up with the latest in local good news via our website.

Going ahead as part of The City of Melbourne Christmas Festival (which looks absolutely magical IMO), Carlton’s Argyle Square will be transformed into a free pop-up outdoor cinema playing nothing but Christmas classics like National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, Elf and The Polar Express.

The screenings will take place every Saturday in December, with bean bags and deck chairs available – though BYO picnic gear is recommended to nab the best spot in the house. The first screening is National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation on Saturday, December 4, while Elf will follow on Saturday, December 11 before finishing with The Polar Express on Saturday, December 18.

Giving the space a festival makeover, the pop-up cinema will be dotted with nutcracker soldiers, pretty Christmas lights, and even an icicle throne, making it the perfect spot for a balmy evening movie and picnic with provisions from Lygon Street’s famous delis, restaurants and gelateria like D.O.C Pizza, King & Godfree, and Pidapipo.

With the movie’s screening at 8:30pm, there’s even time for a leisurely Lygon Street dinner before dusk, before settling in to enjoy epic Christmas classics under the stars.

Go on, pack a picnic and enjoy Christmas movies under the stars! Oh, and the best part of all, it’s completely free!
