Roll up, tune in and watch classic films in this drive-in cinema.

With indoor cinemas across the state still closed, Showbiz Cinemas Ballarat is getting regional Victorians out of the house and into the movies, offering a new COVID-safe big screen experience.

While traditional cinemas remain closed for now, open-air movies were given the green light to open – and with a number of drive-ins reopening in Melbourne – the team at Showbiz Cinemas are bringing that retro drive-in trend to Ballarat.

Taking over the Ballarat showgrounds, the pop-up cinema will be screening a number of old and new films over the next six months, with the first film scheduled to be aired on Friday, November 13. So far movies to hit the big screen include Trolls World Tour, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Grease for the first weekend, with more to be announced very soon. Apparently, we can also expect to see some theme nights as well.

Tickets are priced at $35 per car which means up to five people able to come along (unless you’re in a ute!).

Due to strict coronavirus restrictions, movie goers will have to stay with the parameter of their vehicle for the duration of the film while the movie’s audio track will be streamed through an FM radio transmitter. Those with a ute or a wagon however will have the option of sitting outside on the back or on a couch if they please – you just don’t park your butts on the ground!

There will also be a full candy bar to peruse with digital ordering facilities available which will then be delivered straight to your car. Think popcorn, choc tops, confectionary and all the cinema snacks that we’ve been missing like crazy for the past few months.

This will be the first drive-in cinema to grace Ballarat since their last outdoor cinema experienced closed in 1991, so it’s pretty exciting for the town! The drive-in has also expanded to Swan Hill with the potential for Portland and other regional areas.
