New Swell Choir invites singers of all experience levels to join their welcoming community sessions.

Whether you’re belting out harmonies in the shower or humming along to the radio, joining a choir takes the joy of singing and multiplies it by however many voices are in the room.

But here’s the thing: most choirs come with baggage – auditions, sight-reading, performance pressure. Not this one.

The vibrant community singing group New Swell Choir, founded in early 2023 by opera-trained vocalist Teresa Duddy and guitarist-composer Ben Talbot-Dunn, offers a refreshing approach to group singing that strips away intimidation and focuses purely on the joy of making music together.

The choir’s unique method sees participants learning three to four contemporary songs each term entirely by ear, covering genres from pop to indie and folk. Lyrics are projected on screen during sessions, while recorded parts are provided for those who want to practice at home. It’s an approach that works wonders; singers aged from their 20s to their 90s can participate regardless of their musical background or reading ability.

Each session begins with warm-ups and singing exercises before diving into harmony and counter-melody work. The atmosphere remains relaxed and social, with tea and biscuit breaks providing opportunities for members to connect and catch up. The choir culminates each year with an early December performance, though participation remains entirely optional.

The welcoming environment extends beyond just the singing, with the founders emphasising that every voice belongs in their community. New members are encouraged to sign up for a term of fun and uplifting musical exploration.
