‘All Is Forgiven’ is a six-track EP featuring ‘Looking Back,’ ‘Metal Body,’ ‘Strange Comfort,’ and two fresh tracks, ‘Hurt’ and ‘Miss You.’ The EP offers a glimpse into ENOLA’s softer side, where they explore the concept of staying open and embracing vulnerability. In their own words, “I wanna be someone that remains open, no matter what happens… There’s nothing wrong with getting your heart broken!”
‘Waves,’ the concluding track on the EP, resonates with tremendous energy, resilience, and an unforgettable sound. It serves as a powerful counterpart to the earlier release ‘Metal Body.’ While the latter focused on personal reflection, ‘Waves’ delves into broader societal struggles. It reflects the challenges faced by individuals who navigate the cracks in the system, grapple with the climate crisis, and contend with an unbalanced political landscape.
ENOLA’s Ruby Marshall expresses the frustration that underlies ‘Waves,’ saying, “Waves are really centered on the frustration of it all, feeling like you’re in a boiling pot with everything, from the political climate to the climate crisis, mental health issues, just everywhere I look there’s that feeling of tension rising. When what we need is compassion, what we need is softness.”
The EP strikes a balance between the raw world-weariness of ‘Looking Back’ and the high-octane energy of ‘Waves.’ ‘Hurt’ and ‘Miss You’ explore themes of remaining open to genuine, vulnerable, and human love. ‘Miss You’ showcases a softer side of Ruby Marshall, reminiscent of Mazzy Star, while ‘Hurt’ offers a soundtrack that could easily belong in a David Lynch movie’s end credits.
ENOLA’s journey through the music industry has been nothing short of remarkable. Despite a tumultuous adolescence marked by uncertainty and instability, they’ve grown resilient and compassionate. Their music draws from the likes of Patti Smith’s upfront poetry, Joy Division’s melancholic atmospherics, and IDLES’ unwavering conviction. ENOLA’s unique sound is enhanced by their background in electronic music production, and they’ve teamed up with producer Bonnie Knight to create ‘All Is Forgiven.’
