The beloved CBD restaurant closed its doors back in June.
For the past eight years in a historic former bank in the heart of Geelong, sat one of the best destinations for the glorious feasting ritual of yum cha – Golden Dragon Yum Cha Restaurant.
Taking over the 1888 Boom Classicism style two-storey brick bank, the dining destination (co-owned by Bryan Mu – the restaurateur behind Shinra Ramen and Toki) earned itself a solid reputation among yum cha enthusiasts since opening back in 2015 for their take on the traditional Cantonese brunch, involving Chinese tea and dim sum – small plates of steam, pan-fried and deep-fried dishes to be shared.

Boasting a menu full of classics with a slight twist to them, the restaurant officially announced its closure to social media back in June, citing post-covid trading and financial challenges.
“After eight years, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of Golden Dragon Yumcha. It has been an incredible journey serving our esteemed patrons and being part of your dining experiences,” the post said.
“Due to after covid tough trading and financial challenge, we have made the difficult decision to cease operations. While this was not an easy choice, we believe it is the right one for the long-term sustainability of our business.”
With its prime position in the CBD, Golden Dragon’s yum cha was one of the best excuses to get together with friends with a tonne of food, a few teas and a bottle of soft drink or two.
The business expressed its appreciation to its customers over the years for allowing them to be part of the city’s hospitality story for almost a decade.
“We want to express our deepest gratitude to each and every one of you who has dined with us throughout the years. Your loyalty and support have been instrumental in making Golden Dragon Yumcha a beloved dining destination within our community. It has been our pleasure to serve you and share our passion for exquisite Chinese cuisine.
“Once again, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to all our customers, staff members, and community for your incredible support and patronage throughout the years. We will always remember the laughter, the shared moments, and the joy of serving you.”
While we’ll miss the venue dishing out insanely delicious yum cha, word on the street is Mu has something exciting coming for the space.
