From country to classics, right through to comedy, and a range of creative industries networking events, there’s something for everyone.
Serving as an industry kickstart for a live music and entertainment scene only just emerging from an extended hibernation, the Geelong Arts Centre will welcome The Sunday Sessions early next year.
Supported by Deakin University and the Victorian Government, The Summer Sessions will kick off in February, welcoming a huge bill of dazzling performances and creative events to the city’s most beloved entertainment venues.
Running across the entire month outside, beneath the canopy of theatre’s iconic Big Top, the sessions will feature some of Australian comedy’s biggest names like Tommy Little, Cal Wilson, Claire Hooper, Dave Thornton and Dilruk Jaysinha; a plethora of musical artists across multiple genres – ARIA Award-winner Clare Bowditch, post-post-modern diva Meow Meow, jazz crooners The Syncopators, cabaret queen Dolly Diamond and theatrical Silvie Paladino; and an assortment of family acts.
One that we’ve got our keen eye on is the One Fell Swoop Circus show. Taking over the big top on Friday, February 19 and Saturday, February 20, the circus performance ‘By A Thread’ will offer rich visuals of inventive aerial acrobatics from seven of Australia’s best circus artists. Armed with 30 metres of rope, the acrobatic ensemble is the vehicle through which ideas of risk and trust are explored, creating an intimate audience experience around the dangers and joys implicit in engaging with others.
For those wanting to indulge the kids in some quality entertainment, another highlight includes performances from Trash Test Dummies on Saturday, February 6. This award-winning, side-splitting, slapstick comedy, circus routine takes the household wheelie bin to new heights and delivers a dump-truck full of hilarity.
Alongside the dynamic lineup for the Summer Sessions, a variety of artistic and creative industries networking events will also take place in the recently redeveloped Ryrie Street building, including a fresh circus workshop and an inspiring cultural exploration of our local Indigenous people and their stories through artistic practice.
Tickets for all evening acts under The Big Top will include free pre-show entertainment from local artists including JOTHI, Connor Morel, Lash 78, Hassall, Loud N Deadly and more to be enjoyed while sipping a drink from The Big Top bar.
