Kylie Auldist: Family Free

Around Melbourne, discerning soul fans have long been blessed by the glorious vocals of NSW import Kylie Auldist. Her fourth album Family Tree is a stunner, incorporating the stylish shimmer of EDM, boogie, funk and disco.

‘Sensational’ starts the party, sounding for all the world like a Donna Summer classic. (Video filmed at Cherry Bar.) Bandmates Lance Ferguson (The Bamboos/Lanu) and Graeme Pogson (G.L./ Mondofreaks) share songwriting credits with a strutting cover of Don Walker’s ‘Saturday Night’ between originals. ‘Family Tree’ is a catchy anthem to rival Sister Sledge’s salute to belonging. Auldist’s sassy take on rhythm and phrasing plays off Ferguson’s riffs, Pogson’s synth and fabulous guest horns. Few artists balance the roles of lead vocalist and band member so well.

She’s done so with The Bamboos, Cookin’ On 3 Burners and most outfits she’s fronted. The overall vibe is lush and fun, with sonic surprises scattered across the soundscape. With echoes of Grandmaster Flash, ‘Good Time Girl’ (feat. rapper Merc Mason) is both retro and 21st century fresh. Much from the ’80s was a stylistic shame job, but Auldist celebrates the decade’s funkiest grooves. Pop this one in the ol’ boombox before heading out on the town.
