It’s not often that a drummer from a rock band takes off to start his solo career, but this is the case Kit Warhurst. Originally from Australian band Rocket Science, Warhurst has accomplished his dream of becoming a genuine solo artist.
His debut album, Colour Wheel, is dark and lyrical, fuelled with irresistible pop choruses and garage guitars. The most enjoyable track is opener ‘Nothing In Melbourne’, which is both catchy and memorable. The repetition of the guitar riff in the song is the hook and is what makes it brilliant. ‘Rose Red City’ is perhaps more laid back and Warhurst’s guitar work really shines through, especially in the beginning of the song.
The album itself sounds like a full band set, so it’s surprising when you discover that Warhurst played every instrument himself, layering the tracks together – an amazing accomplishment and a true representation of his dream of becoming a real solo artist. The end product is a full sound, with all the electricity and chemistry of an album that blends together well. It is a lot of work to record every instrument individually, but ultimately this is what makes the album raw and honest. If you haven’t already, it is worth having a listen to.
