Julian James: Whiskey & The Devil

Melbourne based singer, Julian James, is no stranger to the blues. His new album Whiskey and the Devil showcases the smooth beats of blues, intertwined with the twang of country and the upbeat notes of more contemporary sound.

This album will become your Sunday afternoon staple – or any down time for that matter. The easy-to-listen-to tracks sing the comforting melodies of blues music, transporting you far, far away from chaos and the rush of every day.

My personal favourite on the album would have to be ‘Going Down Slowly’. The blues are married with upbeat and contemporary moments that sing a modern take on classic blues. ‘Swing Low, Sweet Chariot’ is one to definitely listen to; smooth lyrics and the continuous low beat is carried throughout the entire song, relaxing, mellow and gospel like vocals to accompany.

A bit of a country twang comes through in the song, ‘Going Home To You’. The light strumming of guitars in the background blend into the bluesy lyrics. Overall, Whiskey and the Devil is definitely one to look out for. If you love the blues and want a taste of a more modern side of this classic sound, Julian James is your guy.
