On first listen to G Flip’s debut album, About Us, tears welled up in my eyes. Not because of the musical arrangements or G Flip’s soft voice, which here tends to sound like it’s through a phone, but because of how goddamn real the album feels.
The ten-track confessional is, for the lovelorn millennial, very relatable. Or as the kids would say, “ooof mood af”. That superman “S” from our collective childhood is even included in the album artwork.
Underneath the glossy production, Flipo’s raw lyrics hit a little too close to home. “Am I really that insane?//Mama said don’t misbehave, yeah//And if I wanna make it work, I better go and dish my dirt,”, Flipo tells us on “Drink Too Much”.
Though she references the Insta-famous Steph Claire Smith on the same track, G Flip offers an antidote for the fake world we live in, and the hyper-saturated vision we all have. For a debut record, About Us is horribly honest.
5 big moods out of 5.
