It’s been just over a year since we lost the Thin White Duke and to this day, we are still reeling over the news. It came as a shock on that fateful day in January 2016, and everyone is getting amongst the extensive back catalogue that he has left us. This year, he would have been 70 and to mark the occasion, the No Plan EP dropped. Opening with ‘Lazarus’ which originally appeared on last year’s Blackstar, the vocals are hard hitting to a mid-tempo beat, and the lyrics are some of the most prevalent of his career. One thing that will stay with me from listening to the EP is the haunting lyric of “Look up here, I’m in heaven, I’ve got scars that can’t be seen”. Delivered in such a haunting manner the saxophone by Donny McCaslin is also a highlight.
‘No Plan’ sounds a little bit like ‘Us and Them’ by Pink Floyd, and through its three and a half minutes, travels through many sonic textures. Knowing full well of his illness, David Bowie has produced a final EP that is a perfect parting gift. I wouldn’t be surprised if No Plan gets an honourable mention in the end of year lists for 2017. If you’re a Bowie fan, you should check this out and if you’re not a Bowie fan, you should check this out. A legacy that will live on forever. Thank you Major Tom for all the happiness and smiles over the years.
