Pnau on coming home, new music, and fighting complacency and predictability

Forte chat to acclaimed electronic act Pnau ahead of their very first performance at Eureka Hotel this month.

Hey guys thanks for chatting with Forte. How are you and what have you been up to recently?
Hey Forte! We are feeling super inspired right now and really excited by life and the new music we are making.

You guys are making a return to Australian stages later this month for a series of special concerts and DJ sets. What are you looking forward to most about been back on our stages?
There will never be another place like Australia for us. It is home and it is just the best place to perform in the world. The crowds are so crazy and we love it when they dress up as their favourite Pnau character. We are keen to see a few chameleons amongst the strawberries this time around.

Just recently getting back into the gigging arena, how has the transition back to live performances been?
Playing live is in our DNA and so it is really something we have missed over the past few years. The technology we now have at our disposal also means that we can bring an even more dynamic and electric element to the shows.

You have an upcoming show at Eureka in Geelong (along with Groovin the Moo and Hot Dub Wine Machine tour), what have you got planned for these shows, and what can the party people expect from your show?
We are bringing all our classics into the new age and remixing everything to ensure a hot throbbing set.

Your hit “Chameleon” is your first single in over four years which has gone viral. Were you expecting the amount of attention the single received?
Chameleon is a special part of us and has been wonderful to see it embraced all around the world.

Why was now the time you chose to release a single after so many years since your debut album in 2012?
We have been very busy with our other projects Empire of The Sun, Two Leaves, Tonite Only and our solo projects but the time is now, for Pnau.

We hear these shows are your way of ramping up for the release of a forthcoming studio full-length. How long has that one been in the works and can we expect a lot more “Chameleon” style hits?
We have lots of new music which may well be coming out as an album very soon! And yes, Chameleon is indeed a taste of the new direction we are heading.

The duo has now expanded to three of you. How are the dynamics, is this all part of evolving your music and creating new sounds of PNAU?
We are always morphing our structure to help shape the direction of our music. It challenges us to keep fighting complacency and predictability.

Now celebrating the next chapter of your career, what are the future plans for the year after the Australian shows?
This will all be revealed in the very near future but it is terribly exciting. Let us just say we will be bringing a lot of new music to all corners of the world.

Thanks for chatting to us, we’re looking forward to seeing you later this month! Any words of wisdom for our readers?
Open your mind.
