The top 5 self-iso activities according to Sydney party-starters Bootleg Rascal

Sydney party-starters Bootleg Rascal have today revealed their spaced out and infectious new single ‘We Independent’ – produced by the band themselves and long-time collaborator Ian Pritchett (Boo Seeka, Kim Churchill, Angus and Julia Stone), and Simon Dobson (Little May, STUPID BABY).

Driven by the duos limitless energy, ‘We Independent’ highlights their experimental flare and sees them delve deeper into the sonic explorations they’ve been toying with since the revamp of the project in mid-2019.

Opening with a groove-laden progression, the lush vocals of frontman Carlos Lara lead into an endearing sing-a-long chorus, that soars with its combination of resounding drums, steadfast bass, jangly guitars and hypnotic brass.

“We Independent is a track we wrote inspired by starting to remove ourselves from a toxic situation,” says guitarist Jimmy Young. “Initially, we were unsure how to break away from it, but sometimes you have to say enough is enough and follow your intuition. We’re so glad we took that leap of faith and couldn’t be heading in a better direction because of taking that risk.” Check out the track below.

While the band is forced off the road, Lara and Young are currently in the studio working on a forthcoming staggered EP titled ‘Collaborations of Very Isolated Delinquents “19’, which will see them release a new track each month, beginning with this single.

To celebrate the project and their new single, we got Carlos to share his favourite activities in isolation – besides from working on this project of course.

Movies
Since the start of isolation, I have watched every single Marvel movie released in order, as well as Lord of the rings (Directors cut obviously!) and Star Wars. I’m not just talking about the main ones! I’m talking prequels, sequels, the lot!

Music
While the Government is vomiting money and it’s my civic duty to stay home to fight this virus, I have been listening to and writing lots of music. It’s getting to a point where I feel like I’m losing my mind even doing that. But really, I’m super lucky to be able to have more time to spend on writing music. If there is one thing we have now, which we didn’t before… it’s time.

Lego
You could say that I am a little ADHD. I need many activities around the house to combat that and Lego is one of those great undertakings. I think I got some festival withdrawals, as I created a full-scale model of Splendour in the Grass, then proceeded to destroy the festival stomping around destroying everything. I’ve done that like 5 times now.

Learning an instrument
We got time, so I thought I would pick up a random instrument to learn called a ‘Badgermin’. It’s a badger crossed with a Theremin (if you don’t believe me, look it up). Aside from that, I’ve been brushing up on my piano playing skills, which is super helpful.

Baking
Like many others in Iso, I have taken up the art of baking. I think my housemates definitely enjoy it. I can make lemon meringue pie, apple pie, pancakes, but my speciality is my special brownies 😉

Keep up to date with the latest via the band’s Facebook.
