The Melbourne International Film Festival announces first titles

Australia’s leading film festival is returning this August and they’ve just announced an impressive list of first glance titles set to feature at MIFF 2017.

Highlights from the lengthy list include Patti Cake$, the story of an aspiring rapper from New Jersey, I Am Not Your Negro, a portrait of James Baldwin and his unfinished manuscript, and the Italian romance regarded as one of the major films of 2017 Call Me By Your Name.

Also with Song to Song feature a stellar line up of Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara, Michael Fassbender, Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett and Holly Hunter telling a love story set in the Austin music scene.

Notable Australian works featuring at MIFF include Mountain, directed by Jennifer Peedom with a soundscape by the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s Richard Tognetti, and Australia Day, a take on a particularly contentious issue in our country through three distinct figures.

These film announcements follow already announced special events including a concert and performative lecture from Michel Chion and a Melbourne Symphony Orchestra live score performance of There Will Be Blood.

The Melbourne International Film Festival will run from Thursday August 3 to Sunday August 20. Tickets via MIFF.
