Australia’s biggest open mic comedy competition RAW Comedy returns for another attempt at finding the nation’s next belly-busting performer. Geelong’s funniest people will be mounting the stage and taking the plunge in the qualifying heat of the Melbourne International Comedy Festivals competition on Saturday 18 February.
This annual hunt for Australia’s undiscovered wit holds heats throughout the state (with Geelong on the list), inviting the nation’s best and boldest comedy athletes to jump head first and compete for a prized podium position.
Each contestant will present five minutes of new, original comedy material including stand-up, sketch, double and triple acts, as well as musical comedy. All heats are open to the public so if you prefer to witness the spectacle, you’re welcome to be apart of the hunt for the next big homegrown comedic-superstar – and spend your evening in fits of laughter.
The Geelong heat will be hosted by comedian Sam Taunton, a former Christmas tree farmer and wedding singer who went on to be a finalist in RAW Comedy. He is now sought-after comedian, TV and radio personality, making his debut at the Melbourne Comedy Festival last year.
Previous RAW Comedy competitors who took the plunge include Chris Lilley, Josh Thomas,
Hannah Gadsby, Peter Helliar, Claire Hooper, Ronny Chieng, Celia Pacquola, Luke
McGregor, and Geelong’s own Jonathan Schuster, proving that RAW Comedy really is the
diving board to success.
While the winner of the heats will continue on to the preliminary and state finals, each contestant will have their five minutes of fame regardless. The national grand final is fittingly held during the Melbourne Comedy Festival in April, which will showcase the best of the best, battling it out for the RAW Comedy crown and a trip to the hugely esteemed Edinburgh Fringe Festival to perform in ‘So You Think You’re Funny?’.
Go on, take the plunge!
