Nominations for the 2017 AIR Awards have been revealed

The 2017 AIR Awards will gather and pay respect to a worthy selection of the past year’s most talented musicians, representing a diverse range of styles and genre.

The AIR Awards have impressively evolved from a small gathering in 2006 to becoming the major event on the Australian music industry calendar that they now are. Acknowledging Australia’s best independent recording artists, the Australian Independent Record Labels Association have presented over 100 individual Awards to date – in many cases launching their recipients into international recognition and success.

The nominations for the coveted Best Independent Artist are D. D. Dumbo, Flume, A.B. Original, Alex Lahey and Ali Barter. The Breakthrough Independent Artist Of The Year nominations – an award presented by Phonographic Performance Company of Australia Limited (PPCA) – are Julia Jacklin, D.D. Dumbo, A.B. Original, Camp Cope and Alex Lahey.

Up for Best Independent Album Or E.P. are Ngaiire’s Blastoma, A.B. Original’s Reclaim Australia, Alex Lahey’s B-Grade University, D. D. Dumbo’s Utopia Defeated and Big Scary’s Animal. Best Independent Single nominations include Flume’s Never Be Like You (feat. Kai), D. D. Dumbo’s Satan, A.B. Original’s January 26 (feat. Dan Sultan), Big Scary’s The Opposite Of Us and Alex Lahey’s You Don’t Think You Like People Like Me.

The Best Independent Hip-Hop Albums are REMI’s Divas And Demons, A.B. Original’s Reclaim Australia, L-Fresh The Lion’s Become, Hau’s The No End Theory and Milwaukee Banks’ Deep Into The Night. Best Independent Country Album nominations include William Crighton’s eponymous release, Henry Wagons’ After What I Did Last Night, Big Smoke’s Time Is Golden, Bill Chambers’ Cold Trail and Halfway’s The Golden Halfway Record.

For Best Independent Blues And Roots Album, you’ll find Archie Roach’s Let Love Rule, The Waifs’ Beautiful You, Russell Morris’ Red Dirt Red Heart, Julia Jacklin’s Don’t Let The Kids Win and The Wilson Pickers’ You Can’t Catch Fish From A Train. For Best Independent Hard Rock, Heavy Or Punk Album, there’s Dead Letter Circus’ Aesthesis, Violent Soho’s WACO, Luca Brasi’s If This Is All We’re Going To Be, Hellions’ Opera Oblivia and Twelve Foot Ninja’s Outlier.

The Best Independent Dance / Electronica Album releases include Flume’s Skin, Jagwar Ma’s Every Now & Then, Elizabeth Rose’s Intra, Friendships’ Nullabor 1988-1989 and Rainbow Chan’s Spacings – while the Best Independent Dance, Electronica Or Club Singles are Flume’s Never Be Like You (feat. Kai), Nick Murphy’s Stop Me (Stop You) and Starley’s Call On Me.

With Best Independent Jazz Album, watch out for Vince Jones & Paul Grabowsky’s Provenance, Keller Murphy Browne’s Travellers, James Morrison & Don Burrows’ In Good Company and Ben Winkelman Trio’s The Knife. Finally, with Best Independent Classical Album, you can look forward to Australian Brandenburg Orchestra’s Brandenburg Celebrates, Slava Grigoryan’s Bach: Cello Suites Vol. 1, Australian Chamber Orchestra / Richard Tognetti’s Mozart’s Last Symphonies and Genevieve Lacey & James Crabb’s Heard This And Thought Of You – with Best Independent Label as yet to be announced.
