Midsumma Festival are seeking expressions of interest for their new initiative ‘Living in Queerantine’

Australia’s leading queer arts and cultural festival, Midsumma Festival, has created ‘Living in the Queerantine’ to support and mentor artists in response to the COVID-19 lockdown and subsequent cancellations that have impacted creative artists adversely, with the next Midsumma Festival scheduled in January 2021.

The program, Living in Queerantine, will award 10 grants of $1,000 each to produce a work on a queer theme that can be showcased on Midsumma’s online platforms, taking on Midsumma’s leading values to “promote, develop and celebrate queer arts and culture. We bring audiences and artists together” and providing a space to share artistic ideas that artists have developed in response to this time of enforced seclusion.

These new works have to be able to be exhibited online and can include digital works, visual art, video recordings (art, spoken word, music), poems, stories, and online workshops, just to name a few examples. Ultimately artists can produce anything creative, as long as it can take on a digital form.

The artwork should explore the concepts of queerness in some sort of physical or emotional isolation/ private and could be an artistic work in response to this time of disruption, but submissions are not restricted to this theme.

While this is a Midsumma grant, the work that you make from this commission will belong to you. Midsumma will keep the right to host your awesome work on their platforms, but beyond that it is all yours to grow, develop or re-present elsewhere.

Expressions of interest are now open and can be filled out here, and will close on Sunday May 3 at 11:59pm.

Successful applicants will be notified week of May 4, with artistic works to be ready for sharing on June 1. These works could be shared throughout June and July, via eNews, blog posts and social comms. This schedule will be locked down after successful participants are confirmed.
