Matt Joe Gow unites with The Weeping Willows for ‘Too Far To Go’

Earning himself a solid reputation for his raw intensity, deep passion and impeccable musicianship over the past decade, Melbourne-via-New Zealand Americana troubadour Matt Joe Gow is back in full force revealing ‘Too Far To Go’, his first release for 2020.

Forever evolving and reshaping, ‘Too Far To Go’ sees Gow teaming up with the southern gothic duo The Weeping Willows for an alluring and wistful duet, showcasing Gow’s vulnerable side with a near-whisper delivery of lush, layered vocals and unwaveringly honest lyricism.

Driven by hypnotic, lullaby plucking guitar, the track showcases the simple beauty of the acoustic guitar, accentuated by the dreamy, harmonious melodies throughout.

While Gow is a talent in his own right, it’s the addition of Andrew Wrigglesworth’s sublime guitar playing, the folk-laced vocals of Laura Coates (both from The Weeping Willows) and of course long-time bandmate Andrew Pollock that truly bring this stunning body of work to life.

“The song was written a few years back, but I was waiting for an opportunity to use the song as a vehicle for an interesting collaboration. It so happened that earlier in the year The Weeping Willows and myself were both in between albums and in Melbourne at the same time so during one of my conversations with Laura, I floated the idea of doing a song together and they were really keen,” Gow explains of the collaboration.

“We had collaborated before, they sang backing vocals on my last album (Break, Rattle And Roll), but I think for both of us the song was a chance to try something different.

“I didn’t want much instrumentation to get in the way of the lyrical content so we stripped it right back and instead of going verse for verse with Laura like a typical duet, I felt it would be a more subtle to blend our voices and sing the entire song together, with the sentiment being delivered like a ‘Goodbye lullaby’ of sorts.”

Embracing dark romantic poetry, it’s the chilling and delicate four-part blend of velvety vocals in the chorus which further emphasizes the mesmeric capacity of this fine collaboration.

‘Too Far To Go’ is a stunning return for Gow following the release of his most recent single ‘Running up that Hill’ last year and his 2018 album Break, Rattle and Roll which saw him take out the Music Victoria award for Best Country Album.
