Looking for a face mask? Here’s some local designers producing them

Please note due to high demand, some of the businesses have sold out of face masks.

Face masks weren’t exactly in any style guides and predicted trends for 2020, but thanks to the global coronavirus pandemic, this is where we’re at.

Of course, social distancing is your first line of defence against the Coronavirus, but due to the second wave currently sweeping Victoria, the state government have made it mandatory for residents to wear masks when they leave their homes, following large daily increases of the pandemic this past month.

While Melbourne’s mask rules are already well in place, from midnight on Sunday, everyone in regional Victoria will also have to wear a mask or a face covering whenever they’re out of the home.

Thankfully, we’re no longer in the phase of the pandemic where only option is to grab a bandanna if you’re wanting to mask up, with many local designers making functional and stylish options.

Here’s a few of our favourites.

Trash Rags, $14
Trash Rags is the side hustle of Geelong stylist Trash Bangs, ‘just a gal with a sewing machine and no idea what she’s doing… making and upcycling Trash.’ Lucky for ya’ll, that includes making triple layered face masks with pocket for filter and elastics.

Unfortunately she can’t take pre-orders as she can only sew after hours and doesn’t want to have a backlog of requests piling up with no spare time to finish them (totally fair enough) so instead she will upload batches to her online store here as they are finished. You can stay in the loop via her Instagram page.

Greenroom Surfskatecafe
This locally owned surf shop has been servicing the Surf coast, Bellarine Peninsula and Geelong areas for more than 20 years, becoming to go-to for expert advice and fitting of surf, skateboard hardware, clothing, shoes and accessories.

As the regular snow bunnies will know, face masks are nothing new when it comes to the snow fields, and Greenroom Surfskatecafe are currently stocking Brixton face masks. Currently available for pre-order, these masks are made with antimicrobial, nanosilver-infused fabric helps prevent bacteria and microbe growth; have 4-Way stretch fabric in a 3D pre-shaped design for personalized, custom fit; have an interior pocket for adding a filter insert (filter insert not included); and come with ultra soft elastic ear loops to gently secure the mask. They’re also lined with soft cotton jersey for breathability and comfort. Orders will be shipped as soon as the product lands in store, currently expected to be August 17.

Check it out via the website.

The Boho Suitcase, $15
The creative side hustle of music photographer Lucinda Goodwin, ‘The Boho Suitcase’ is dedicated to creating handmade goodies by combining a love of vintage and op shopping, usually in the form of handmade journals.

Now she’s pivoted into creating face masks for the local community. These are double layer cotton with elastic and can be purchased via her website for $15 each. For Geelong buyers, if you select local drop off, Lucinda will personally pop them in your letter box.

The Sewing Room, $8
Located in Portarlington, The Sewing Room is a home based studio creating a range of quality homemade gifts, clothing, baby toys and teething rings plus so much more. Now like many others, they’re also creating masks.

Available in adult, large adult and kids sizes, these masks are dual layer, reversible, washable cotton masks and can be purchased for $8 each or 2 for $15 (cash only).

You’ll find them at 121 Newcombe street Portarlington (home studio with shopping window to ensure safe distancing).

Tyoub, $20
Specialising in toddler and baby swimwear, Tyoub is an ethical sustainable children’s brand that we would usually find at the Geelong Baby and Children’s Market. The swimwear and reusable swim nappy are Nordic inspired and their colourful, cool and clever designs look great on and are environmentally friendly… but that’s not why they’ve made the list.

Tyoub have extended their product line to include face masks, given the current demand! Available in adult, student and kids sizes, the masks are made in cotton fabrics with organic bamboo or cotton lining. While they’re handmade in Melbourne, Tyoub are well loved by the Geelong Baby and Children’s Market and that’s good enough for us!

Sarah T Russo

SisterWorks, $18
Okay we said seven locals, but we just had to add an eighth. It’s not a small business per se, but SisterWorks is a not-for-profit organisation supporting female refugees, asylum seekers and migrants by providing work and empowerment through commerce – meaning we just had to add them in!

The group operates hubs in Bendigo, Richmond and Dandenong where women can attend a range of programs, all focused on learning by doing. With hubs forced to close due to lockdowns, the group began creating masks so that its community, one of the most vulnerable in Australia, could still earn an income. The masks are made from home, keeping sisters employed while social distancing.

These masks are made from donated cotton fabric and loose-weave muslin, with a pocket to insert extra layers, or a filter, and are available in a range of designs for both men and women. 50% of the profits goes directly to the migrant, refugee or asylum seeker Sister that has made the mask.

They’re not exactly local, but it’s a really great cause to get behind if you’re looking for a quality mask. They’ve also got a tonne of other great reusable products on sale as part of Plastic Free July.

You can buy them online here.

Please note. This article only lists a few small handful of the many local designers and at-home sewers producing some quality masks, and in no way are we implying these are your only options. Facebook marketplace and community groups will be your go-to if you’re wanting to look at some other options.

Be safe Forte fam.
