Local designers have launched an independent cookbook series focused on keeping Geelong venues alive

As coronavirus continues to spread around the world, wreaking havoc on small businesses everywhere, local design hub Neighbourhood Creative have put their talent to good use, with a new initiative that intends to support the hospitality scene in Geelong.

Inspired by the growth of the local restaurant, cafe and bar scene over the last few years, Neighbourhood Creative have come up with Take Away, an independent cookbook series focused on keeping our local venues alive.

By creating inexpensive, standard format paperback cookbooks where authors/venues make the majority of the profit, the local designers hope this creates an alternative revenue stream for the many treasured food venues during these troubling times.

The books will be designed as a series and be short in length. This allows for venues that may not necessarily have an entire book in them, but have the 30(ish) recipes and enough of a story for an intro with some photography or illustration, making it possible for venues large and small.

The short cookbooks will be available for pre-order on their website, for people to choose the restaurant, bar or cafe that they would like to support. This is perfect for those who are choosing to forfeit their daily coffee to stay home but who still want to help out their favourite independents.

Due to the current climate, a funding minimum is needed for the book will go into editorial and design, which will then be sent on for print and ship on-demand. If the funding minimum is not met, the site will effectively act as a crowdfunding site and forward the generated money to the restaurant, bar or cafe. There’s really no losing in this situation. Afterall, Take away’s purpose is to support your local hangout … so it’s there when we all get back on track!

There are currently two books already available for pre-order via the website. Geelong West Social Club is sharing some of their most-loved recipes and some favourite memories of their journey so far in one book, and the other ‘Tacos Y Liquor’ comes from Aaron Turner, the chef behind IGNI and The Hot Chicken Project, detailing recipes and rantings about his newest project.

Best of all, the books are only $20. So what are you waiting for?
