Here are some local events to celebrate ladies for International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day is universally celebrated on March 8. This year, the campaign is calling for everyone to #BeBoldForChange to help forge a better, more gender inclusive working world.

For some, the event marks a moment to celebrate, but for others it’s a call to action- a commitment to raise awareness, and rally people to pledge their support to help forge gender parity.

Geelong will be celebrating a number of International Women’s Day Events. If you want to get involved and support the day, here are some event’s you can attend in the region:

Geelong Women in Business Event

Geelong Women in Business brings you the IWD Breakfast at Winters Cafe, Pakington Street. With special guest Julia Warren from Buxton Real Estate, the ticket includes an empowering event alongside some of Geelong’s most prominent women in business, and a hot breakfast.

The event starts at 7am; tickets available via Eventbrite.

Geelong Gallery

The Geelong Gallery will be celebrating International Women’s Day through a special event: a private viewing of the exhibition, Abstraction: Celebrating Australian Women Abstract Artists, followed be a conversation with a panel of creative women discussing ideas around art, gender and politics.

Panelists include:
Kaz Paton: Manager of the Arts and Culture Department of the City of Greater Geelong
Melinda Harper: celebrated Melbourne-based abstract aritist
Lara Nicholls: Assistant Curator of Australian Paintings and Sculpture at National Gallery of Australia
Lisa Sullivan- Curator, Geelong Gallery.

The Event will be held at the Geelong Gallery, Wednesday March 8th; 5.00pm-7.30pm.

Deakin University Campus Events

In celebration of International Women’s Day, Deakin University Waurn Ponds, Geelong Waterfront and Warrnambool campus are marking the day with a morning tea. Three Deakin women at each campus will be presenting a brief personal response to the UN Women’s International Day theme for 2017 ‘Women in the Changing World of Work: Planet 50:50 by 2030.’

The free event on March 8 takes place in the Library foyer at each campus 10am-11am. Registrations are still needed, do so via the website.

Soroptimist International Women’s Day Breakfast 

Founder of non-profit organisation that helps women who have been freed from the sex trafficking trade, the Offspring Project, will take to a breakfast to inspire women on the day. Kristi Van Es will inspire at a breakfast put on by Soroptimist International from 7am at Capri House.
