Geelong’s Nemesium have released their debut album Continua and it is high stakes metal

After years of circulating the Victorian scene, extreme-metallers Nemesium have finally released a full length album. Opening with a sample of a vintage movie immediately gave me a throwback to many metalcore albums released in the early 2000’s. But whilst bands such as The Amity Affliction, The Devil Wears Prada and I Killed The Prom Queen may have adopted similar approaches for their debut releases opener, that’s where the similarities stop.

‘Continua’ is too brutal to even be in the same sentence as those bands.

From the second ‘Archetype’ kicks in, you are introduced to the shearing intensity of Nemesium.

It’s high stakes metal; as if each and every song is a time trial to one up their previous individual best efforts. ‘Boundaryless’ caught my immediate attention by its impressive use of vocals; with the highs and rhythm sections at times reminding me of ‘The Black Dahlia Murder.’

While extreme-mtal acts like Dimmu Borgir and Behemoth benefit from their semi-symphonic moments, Nemesium strip their songs back to grimey, simmering riffs that don’t drop in rawness of sound. It may not provide moments of rest throughout the album as their contemporaries approach does, but it does do incredible things for the overall vibe of the album. The intensity rarely stops to let punters take a sip on their beer.

With that being said, I must highlight ‘The Fire and The Flesh’ which marked a personal favourite of mine with its subdued approach highlighting a sound I’d love to see Nemesium explore more of.

‘Continua’ is now available via all streaming platforms via Black Lion Records.
