We stopped by Uncle Donut for a taste test, here’s our verdict

Donut lovers rejoice. Our prayers were answered recently with a dedicated donut store popping up right in the heart of Geelong. From the team behind cafe Uncle Jack’s in Ocean Grove comes Uncle Donut – a one-stop shop for these delectable creations.

Recently our carb-loading love affair with these yummy treats reached new levels when we decided to try out all the donut flavours this month – we know, it’s a tough job, but someone has to do it.

Here’s what we found…

Dulce de Leche

Amanda: The prettiest of the donuts (never thought I’d say that in a sentence) this one’s on the sugary side. But hey, there’s flakes of almonds so that’s got to be good for you, yeah? Would eat again.

Talia: Delicioso! Just the name of this one transports me to a foreign country. It’s rich, creamy with a caramel-flavour hit and looks just as good as it tastes.

Caitlin: Delicious honey flavoured? Or caramel? Roll me around in toasted almonds please!

Bananut

Amanda: Not going to lie, this is probably my least favourite of the Uncle Donut flavours on offer, but there’s still always a place for banana, nutella and some nuts. The flavours are more subtle compared to the other varieties.

Talia: Light, sweet and natural pretty much like a banana muffin – this one tastes like it could be good for me… but I doubt it. Maybe I could get away having it for breakfast though…

Caitlin: Didn’t realise I needed to eat the banana to taste the banana… but the rest was bloody good.

Strawberry Jam (Caitlin’s Pick)

Amanda: Biting into this you can instantly taste the strawberry. Strawberry jam that tastes like real strawberries! A classic with a home-made touch.

Talia: No words, well other than sugary, doughy and delicious. The classic cinnamon donut with a super sweet surprise in the centre – you can just tell this is home-made jam from the first bite.

Caitlin: Oh my god. Amazing

Jaffa

Amanda: Still not sure how I feel on this one, only because my history with jaffa lollies isn’t the greatest. Nonetheless, it tastes exactly as it should with a gooey orange layer and dark chocolate icing. It’s a little bit fancier than the other donuts.

Talia: Actually not a massive fan of jaffa flavour in general so this one was out of my comfort zone. The donut was coated in a dark chocolate glaze and despite the name, I was preparing myself for a super sweet choccy flavour, but nope, it was definitely jaffa. Kudos to new experiences though.

Caitlin: Shook. Didn’t realise it would taste like that, it was very unexpected.

Crazy in the Coconut (Amanda’s Pick)

Amanda: There is so much flavour in this one, and it’s honestly hands down my favourite. Not only does it feature my favourite things (the sweetness of coconut cream and the tart of lime curd) it’s super moist (yep) and looks like a donut with an egg on top (but tastes much better than that).

Talia: It’s fresh, it’s flirty and it’s zesty. Yes, yes and yes!

Caitlin: Didn’t actually get to taste this one because Amanda dropped it before I had the chance… (Ed’s note: The germs add to the flavour).

Nutella (Talia’s Pick)

Amanda: An oldy but a goody, I still wouldn’t rate this as my top flavour but like drinking Melbourne Bitter all weekend at a festival, it’s the kind of thing that never gets old. Plus, nutella, am I right?

Talia: It was love at first bite. As a self-confessed chocoholic, I was sold on the magical donut that oozed mounds of hazelnut spread… Overall Satisfaction 10/10.

Caitlin: Chocgasm… and a few swear words.

Thanks Uncle Donut! Whether they’re artisan and adventurous, or old-school and jam filled, we’re still nuts for these donuts.

When & Where: 100 Little Malop St, Geelong. Open Wednesday to Saturday from 10am until sold out.
