Darebin Music Feast Presents Feast Films: Celebrating Extraordinary Women in Music.

To complement 2018’s already incredibly diverse music program, Darebin Music Feast introduces a first foray into cinema with Feast Films. In partnership with the freshly opened Thornbury Picture House, Feast Films continues the theme of gender and the music industry, with screenings of feature and documentary films which follow the extraordinary lives and careers of music’s trailblazing women.
The films shown include:
Her Sound, Her Story
Looking into the personal experiences, histories and significant an social impacts of women in the Australian music industry. Through the eyes of over 45 artists spanning over six decades the film extends the current knowledge and asks, ‘Where do we want women’s voices to sit in the world today?’. WIth the likes of Claudia Sangiorgi Dalimore (Director/Producer) and Michelle Grace Hunder (Producer).

PATTI CAKE$
Set in the gritty strip-mall suburbia, the unlikely rapper finds her voice as a one-of-a-kind hip-hop legend. PATTI CAKE$ chronicles an underdog’s quest for fame and glory with humour, raw energy and some unforgettable beats. Starring Australia’s Danielle Macdonald.

The Punk Singer
A 2013 documentary that explores the life and career of musician and activist Kathleen Hanna. As lead singer of punk band Bikini Kill and dance-punk trio Le Tigre, Hanna rose to attention as the reluctant, but never shy voice of the riot grrrl movement. She became one of the most famously outspoken feminist icons, and a cultural lightning rod for the feminist movement.

The Song Keepers
Born in the obscure churches of remote Central Australia, where a hidden musical legacy of ancient Aboriginal languages, sacred poetry and baroque music is being preserved by four generations of song women who make up the Central Australian Aboriginal Women’s Choir. Against all odds and with the help of their charismatic conductor, the choir embarks on a historic tour of Germany to take back the hymns that were given to their great grandparents by German missionaries, now sung in their own Aboriginal languages.

A Life in Waves
Following the career of electronic music pioneer, Suzanne Ciani, from her earliest experiments through to her multi-million-dollar advertising campaigns, trendsetting record label and adventures in the 1970s New York electronic scene. Through it all emerges a portrait of a woman who carved her own path through a male-dominated world, believing in a unique artistic vision and fighting for the success she deserved.

20 Feet from Stardom
Millions know their voices, but no one knows their names. In his compelling film 20 Feet from Stardom, award-winning director Morgan Neville shines a spotlight on the untold true story of the backup singers behind some of the greatest musical legends of the 21st century. The film is both a tribute to the unsung voices who brought shape and style to popular music and a reflection on the conflicts, sacrifices and rewards of a career spent harmonizing with others.
