Boom Gallery

Boom Gallery is located in the thriving creative hub of Rutland St, Newtown. Housed in a former woolen mill, the industrial building boasts three main exhibition spaces, a design gallery featuring handmade ceramics and jewellery, a vibrant cafe and artwork stockroom. Boom also offers a diverse program of art classes and workshops for all ages ranging from painting and drawing to weaving and flower arranging. Factory 21 is also run by Boom, leasing studios for artists, creative practitioners and small businesses.

The exhibition program at Boom rotates monthly meaning there is always something new to see. This month there is a solo show of paintings, drawings and constructions from Brisbane artist Shane Drinkwater, a group exhibition of paintings by Kasper Raglus and Matt Dettmer and also an interactive adult playground created by award winning design duo Dowel Jones. Pop into Boom to have a play on the seesaw or visit ‘Current Exhibitions’ on their website for images and further information.

Mid May will see some Boom favourites return with solo shows from Ingrid Daniell, Chelsea Gustafsson and Ngaio Lenz. Ingrid’s bright and colourful coastal landscapes explore the temporary nature of moments in life, the memories and how these string together to create identity, connection and belonging. Chelsea’s exhibition will feature paintings of fabulous white peacocks, hair worn like awkward disguises and helium balloons spelling out words that depict running commentary of thought bubbles. Ngaio’s new body of work titled Papercut Garden is a series of framed collage works and large paintings on canvas which explore the beauty of vintage paper, and the stylised shapes of a garden, recreated with a sense of history and process of layering and scraping. These exhibitions will all open on Friday May 13 from 5:30-8:00pm.

In the next few months Boom will be regularly hosting art and craft workshops on Saturdays, including a Screen Printing session with Home-Work from Melbourne. Boom also has a fantastic School Holiday Program for kids coming up in July.
