The Bendigo Craft Beer + Cider festival is on this weekend (Saturday, March 25) and for those heading to Bendigo for the first time, we rounded up a few great ways to spend your time in town. Of course, bringing great company and preparing to sample some of the finest craft beer and cider is mandatory.
BREAKFAST STOP
Depending where you’re coming from, the drive can be long and arduous, so ultimately we recommend staying somewhere in Bendigo the night before to be well-rested for a full day of antics. When it comes to breakfast time, our pick is the Bendigo Corner Store Cafe, which is a popular spot for locals – get there early if you want a table! You can find them at 305 View Street.
PAY A VISIT TO THE GALLERY
The Bendigo Art Gallery has played home to some of the largest touring exhibitions, with a particular focus on those of the fashion variety. The gallery is located at 42 View Street.
LAST-MINUTE LUNCH & SHOPPING
If you’re running a bit behind time to make the festival’s opening at 11am, stop by El Gordo for a delicious Spanish inspired feast. You can find them in Chancery Lane, where there are also several boutique stores and shops to browse. Not to mention some quirky street art lining the brick laneway.
HEAD TO THE FESTIVAL
Getting to the festival is relatively easy with a central location and plenty of public transport (and parking) available. Head to the event website to find out further details.
With plenty of food offerings (Tacoman – Mexican Tacos, Yum Az – Buttermilk Chicken, Pulled Kitchen – Pulled Pork Burgers & Poutine, Wark Clark -Thai, Flip’n Mini Donuts – Donuts & Ice Cream, Lady Sultan – Turkish) if you haven’t already, make a quick detour on the site for lunch before you start sampling the 100+ beers and ciders on offer.
Entertainment comes with Greer, Jack and the Kids, Grim Fawkner, and as there are over 100 beers and ciders to choose from, it’s worth planning your day out accordingly (after all, it’d be a shame to miss anything!).
KEEP THE PARTY GOING
With the festival running until approximately 7pm, the night is still young and Bendigo has plenty to offer! Handle Bar is one the spots to be, with a great outdoor section offering espresso martinis, beers and more. Enter via Get Naked Espresso Bar located at 73 Mitchell St. Stopping by Mr Beebe’s for a few drinks (and perhaps a late, late night snack) is guaranteed to be a good time. Located at 17 View Point.
STAYING OVER
If Air BnB isn’t your thing, and you’re on the classier side, our top pick for a luxurious stay is The Schaller Studio. It’s part of the Art Series Hotels, which places a focus inspired by and dedicated to Australian Contemporary Artists. Though if you’re looking for the cheapest weekend possible, head to the local BIG4, it’s a little bit on the fun side and much easier on the wallet.
