Surfbeat: Surf Films are Back!

This summer surf films return to Torquay for the annual Bells Beach Surf Film Festival. Surf films have been a tradition on our coast for over 50 years as surf film makers continue to present in the big screen the best surfers riding the best waves in the world.

Today surf films are becoming more sophisticated as they present more documentary style stories about real issues. It’s also interesting that a number of modern surf filmmakers are returning to 16mm film cameras as they strive to capture surfing in its purest, most natural form.

Now in its sixth year, the festival is the longest running surf film festival in Australia. This year features 10 award winning films from Australia and around the world on the big screen at the Australian National Surfing Museum Theatre in Torquay.

The festival opens on Wednesday 6th January with Jason Baffa’s surf documentary Bella Vista featuring Dave Rastovich and Chris Del Moro surfing stunning waves in Italy followed by the Australian Premiere of award winning English short film Freezing (a truly funny surf film with a difference).

Other films screening at the festival include The Salt Trail, Mad Dogs and the compelling short documentary I Lost My Dream by former Geelong filmmaker Stefan Hunt.

Opening night will also feature live music by local singer/surfer Oscar Lalor and plenty of drinks on the night to get punters in the mood for three great surf films. The festival closes on Saturday 9th with the Victorian Premiere of Fish, Joseph Ryan’s documentary about the history of the Fish surfboard design.

The Bells Beach Surf Film Festival is presented by the Bells Beach Surf Film Society with support from the Surf Coast Shire, Patagonia and Blackman’s Brewery Torquay.
