Preparing for a Beach Holiday

Now that Christmas has sadly been and gone, and the New Year is in full swing, I’m fairly confident in saying that there’s one place we all want to spend the rest of our holidays: the beach!

After living in the UK for three years and now officially being back in Australia and back in Geelong, I’ve been having some serious beach cravings.

The beach is an excellent choice for a holiday or small getaway. It can reduce your stress levels, give you the chance to soak up some Vitamin D, and it’s a tonne of fun! There are many different options for a beach holiday, you could stay right on the beach, set up on a camping site or settle in a coastal cabin.

The first (and most likely hardest) step to start planning your beach holiday is to decide where you actually want to go! Will you keep it local and hit up the Surf Coast? Or make your way up to Queensland? You might even take it a step further and head overseas! I can hear Jamaica’s sandy beaches are calling my name…

Beach holidays are always made more fun when there’s a big group of people involved. See if your friends are interested in joining in, or maybe your family. Hitting up the beach is fantastic for the little ones, and is also a hoot of a time for a big group of friends.

Once you’ve decided where you’re going, and who’s tagging along, it would be good to consider the logistics. For example, whether you’ll be driving your own car, if you’ll need to hire one, or if you’ll even need to use transport at all because where you’re staying might be close enough to everything by foot.

Deciding what to pack is also very exciting. What will you wear? What beach activities will you have ready and raring to go? Think about whether or not you’ll need a tent, an umbrella, or beach chairs. These are some of the important things to consider to ensure you’re comfortable and set up for your days by the sea.

Make sure you pack more than just your bathers, too! You might end up doing more than just mooching at the beach, so be sure to throw in some ‘normal’ clothes.

Being an Australian, I’m sure you know the importance of sunscreen, but I may as well mention it, anyway! Be sure to slip, slop, slap! Our sun can be seriously harsh, so it’s important to keep our lovely skin protected. If you’re a lot like me, and can get seriously sunburnt even when sitting in the shade, I’d suggest purchasing a 50+ sunscreen!

In the lead up to your getaway, there might be a few finishing touches to do before you head off. You might want to apply some fake tan to already look the part, or you might go all out and get some nice highlights in your hair. You could even take it to that next level and have a wax! Wowee!

This beach holiday malarkey surely is serious business! But once you’re there and enjoying yourself, all of the preparation will totally be worth it! Surf’s up!
