Blues News #629

Golf has never been my thing, but this is a twist and it’s for a good cause. It’s a sensational concert in support of Karingal. The line-up for the 2016 Music to a Tee, following the Karingal Hundred Hole Hike on 22nd January, is the biggest yet and features one of the most outstanding blues outfits in Australia: 2011 ARIA Blues and Roots nominees and I-Tunes Australian Blues and Roots album of the year winners The Backsliders.

Backsliders, celebrating 30 years in 2016, are still “redefining, refining and diversifying the [blues] genre” (The Australian, 2014). Regulars at Bluesfest, Woodford Folk Festival and festivals Australia-wide, Dom Turner, Rob Hirst, and Ian Collard will bring their trademark driving Delta and Mississippi Hill country blues sounds with original 21st Century new blues anthems to the lawns of the 13th Beach Golf Links to head up a great bill.

The Backsliders have been playing, touring the festival circuit and recording for 29 years. Slide guitarist, multi-stringed instrumentalist, songwriter and vocalist, Dom Turner, is the founding member of the group. Dom’s influences are many and varied – a blend of delta blues, piedmont blues, rock, dub and sounds of Asia. Drum and percussion virtuoso and songwriter Rob Hirst (Midnight Oil), an acclaimed name synonymous with the best of Australian music, has been with Backsliders for 14 years. Rob stands as one of the world’s great drummers – now drawing on his early jazz and swamp-rock influences to produce a sound that is integral to the Backsliders 21st century blues grooves. ARIA award winning harmonica genius Ian Collard (Collard, Greens & Gravy) will join Dom and Rob at Milton theatre.

Renowned for their captivating live shows, the Backsliders play an eclectic mix of blues styles moving from driving delta blues riffs and jungle-like rhythms to ‘Piedmont’ blues influenced ‘all-acoustic’ unplugged treatments of 1920s songs by blues heroes such as Mississippi Fred McDowell and Robert Johnson.

The Backsliders will be sharing the stage with a stellar line up including the great singer/songwriter and storyteller Stephen Cummings, The Band Who Knew Too Much, “one of Australia’s greatest voices”, Sally Dastey, Tim McCallum, the Carers Choir and local band Growland. Bring a picnic rug or low lying chairs. Pre-order gourmet BBQ is available plus food stalls on the day. (No BYO Food or Alcohol permitted). Fabulous auction items will be up for grabs plus raffles throughout the day.

For those who can’t wait, another legend of Australian blues, Renee Geyer headlines with special guest Sarah Carroll on 8th January 2016. Tickets selling fast. So don’t much around, head on over to the Karingal or 13th Beach websites for more info and tickets: www.karingal.org.au/foundation or 13thBeach.net

Remember that Sleepy Hollow is still recovering from the concentrated intoxication of the Bluestone Festival, and there will be no club gig this month.

The February SHBC gig on the 28th is definitely one to look forward to. Something very special on the list, trust me, there will be a queue when this one goes up.
