Ballarat Blog #672

Winter has given locals a clip under the ear at its tail end. As far as Ballarat winters go, it has been a reasonably mild one until the last few weeks.

Talented artists are still happy to make the trip to our beautiful town though and a real treat for music lovers will be Mental As Anything coming to play at Suttons House Of Music on September 16. 40 years of recording and 25 top 40 songs is quite a resume and $45 to get in will be money well spent. Do get your tickets early as this will sell out quicker than Grand Final tickets if the Tigers make it!

Johnny Rooster will warm the stage the night before with their powerful mix of Texas, Chicago and contemporary blues. Four local musicians have come together to pay homage to many of the great Blues acts including Buddy Guy, Albert Collins and Gary Moore to name a few, with a number of surprises tossed in for good measure. All played the way blues should be played – loud and brash.

Japanese sugar coated rockin’ fun trio Shonen Knife return to Australia for the fourth time in 30 years since their debut visit to this far away land on the Big Day Out back in 1997. September 23 will see them play at Karova Lounge. Last time they were in Oz, they played a string of shows together with Rocket from The Crypt and rocked the socks off the lucky punters that got along to see them. This will be an interesting night and these rockers have been at it for over 25 years. Ben Ely (Reguritator) will be the support act, so well worth getting along to see his latest tunes.

Many local venues are displaying work from the Ballarat Foto Biennale. Look for the yellow and black signage out the front of the shops/galleries/restaurants. I was very impressed with the display in Forge Pizzeria and if you have a chance to have a geezer at this fine display of art, get in to town before it ends around mid-September.

I’ve found the best hamburger in the region at the Buninyong Hotel and although it will set you back $22, I guarantee you will walk out content, especially if you wash it down with a nice cold Furphy, which is available on tap.

Now… what was that song… Come on Spring, do your thing!
