Ballarat Blog #665

Miazma are bringing death metal to Ballarat when they play at Karova Lounge on June 7. Heading off on their Abysmal Thoughts Tour, the four-piece from the Northern Territory are bringing their Marshal stacks and distorted guitars to Ballarat. Support acts are Deadspace and Eternal Rest and although it is a mid week gig, it’s a very affordable $10 to get in. The perfect way to break up the week.

Suttons House of Music have Australia’s most prestigious ’70s soul/R&B groups Stylus playing on June 10. The band have quite a catalogue to choose from and have re-issued four albums from way back in 1999.The Stylus songlist comprises their classic hits from the ’70s, and a chunk of new original material to get you smoking up the dance floor. One tip for the venue is you will only get a reserved table if you book for dinner. Seating is often at a premium, so either get there early or you might be standing for the night. $30 to get in!

The Bean Project will do the Sunday sesh at Suttons on June 11 from 2.30pm. Hailing from the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne, their vibrant French horn-clad acoustic sounds blended with folk and jazz have given the band a fresh and unique take on songwriting. It’s also free to get in, so it looks like the perfect way to celebrate the long weekend. The Coldstream Pale Ale on tap here is one of the stand-out beers in Ballarat.

The pub of the week is The Black Hill Hotel. Drop in and say hello to Tom who is one of the friendliest publicans I have met in the Rat. The pub has a bit of a special if you order and eat your meal in the main bar. You get a free pot of beer – yes free beer! That’s enough to get anyone off their butt and into one of Ballarat’s newest watering holes. The food is really good also. Another unique drop on tap is the Footscray Pale Ale which has been popular with the locals. Nice little pub up on the hill and well worth a visit.
