Dracula heads to Bendigo

Bendigo is in for a bloody classic with the critically-acclaimed production Dracula making its way to the Ulumbarra Theatre next month.

Presented by shake & stir theatre co and QPAC, the Gothic horror story follows a young lawyer (Jonathan Harker) who visits Castle Dracula deep within the Carpathian mountains of Transylvania to complete the sale of the house. As luck would have it, he soon becomes alone and trapped with the castles walls, discovering that his mysterious host Dracula wants more than just his company. Leaving Jonathan for dead and his castle behind, Dracula travels to London on a quest for seduction, true love and the blood of Jonathan’s fiancée Mina.

Evil desires, evil forces and the struggles between innocence and sin circle this twisted tale, directed by the award-winning Michael Futcher and adapted by shake & stir’s artistic directors Nelle Lee and Nick Skubij.

The play features a stellar cast including fellow artistic director Nelle Lee, Ross Balbuziente, Michael Wahr (Othello, Hamlet), Adele Querol (Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead) and David Whitney (My Fair Lady, Fiddler on the Roof, 1984, Rock of Ages), all playing their part to balance the horror and humour in this theatrical version.

Shake & stir theatre co have a reputation for their clever and appealing adaptation of classic texts, including the likes of Animal Farm, 1984 and 2014’s Wuthering Heights, and their take on the original Dracula follows the same path, telling a thrilling version of the tale.

Every bit as tortured and charismatic as Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel, this adaptation is sure to be an electrifying adventure that drags you in to the dark world and ignites a new-found or rekindled curiosity of the original Dracula – definitely one to sink your teeth into.
