A boutique New Year’s bash is the place to be this NYE, and with the end of the year just days away, NYE on the Hill could be your ticket… especially because they’re featuring The M.O.A – the Melbourne via Birmingham indie outfit.
We chat to the band ahead of their performance.
First up, congrats on the release of your second single ‘Marbles’! What’s the story behind the track?
Thanks! ‘Marbles’ is about becoming a product of your environment and how certain behaviours can stay with you into later life once learned at a young age. It’s also about coming to the understanding that there is almost always a choice in the matter and sometimes good things comes out of the bad.
What was the creative process like on this one?
I wrote the Lyrics in the UK after the lads had sent over a few ideas to work on. It has evolved a fair bit from there. We added the samples in towards the end which are real-life recordings I made in Coventry and Bristol.
We dig the production on the track. Was that done locally?
Yes the Production was done in house in Melbourne by AJB from the band who also directed the video.
This comes hot off the back of your debut single ‘Mind at Large’, with an album on the way? Where are you guys at with that? Will it follow suit to these singles musically, or will we be in for a few surprises?
We have a good bank of tracks as it stands and new bits being made aswell. There are definitely some different sounds and styles in there and we plan to be putting out an album in the new year which will have a good mix of what we’ve been up to on there.
With the set at NYE on the Hill done and dusted, we’re sure you’ll be going into 2020 on a high! Do you have a New Years’ resolution?
I don’t really make them.. maybe dive as deep into writing as possible.
You’re a Melbourne via Birmingham indie outfit; how does the music scene compare? What brought you to Melbourne?
It depends, obviously London will measure up very differently in comparison to the midlands where I come from. It’s like with Australia, some cities just have better scenes and Melbournes is thriving. Rossi, guitarist in The M.O.A. is from Birmingham originally before fleeing to oz and we grew up together so that’s where the Melbrum link comes from.
We’re moving into a new decade. What is the goal for the next 10 years?
Not allowing hangovers to become an issue.

I heard Melbournes in the 40s at the moment so Baz Luhrmann ennit.
