Captain your own dog-friendly GoBoat for the ultimate kind of picnic on the Yarra

If your ideal picnic takes place on a boat with a glass of vino and your pooch in tow, GoBoat has you covered.

Ever dreamed of being your own captain on the river, sans the need for a boat licence? Or perhaps you’ve been looking for a new way to level up your picnic game for the summer season?

If your ideal picnic takes place on a boat with a glass of vino and your pooch in tow, Melbourne’s GoBoat has you covered, reopening just in time for summer.

After launching its eco-friendly picnic boats in cities all over Europe, the Danish company made the leap to Australia in recent years, giving punters a fun new way to cruise the Yarra – and you don’t even have to be well-versed in sailing to steer this ship!

Keep up with the latest in local good news via our website.

The 18-feet long, Scandinavian-designed vessels are constructed from recycled plastic bottles and recycled timber and are slow-moving, silent and pollution-free. Running on electric engines, these babies don’t require a boating licence, making for fuss-free sailing sessions.

Boasting a central picnic table with room for up to eight people, all you have to do is BYO food, drinks, friends and pets (yes, they are pet-friendly!!), and you’ve got one helluva day ahead!

From inside the boat, you’ll be able to explore from Docklands, right up to Herring Island and beyond. Passing by Flinders Street Station, Federation Square, Southgate, South Wharf, Birrarung Marr, Crown Casino, Alexandra Gardens and all the way up to Herring Island and beyond.

It must be noted however that the ‘captain’ must have a blood alcohol level of .05% at all times, so make sure you recruit a responsible mate when booking the boats.

While regional Victorians will have to wait just a little bit longer to try out the Go Boats, the business is currently letting up to five fully vaccinated people from a maximum of two households – or two partially vaccinated people — take out a boat, operating under the same rules as picnics. You must live within 15km of Southbank and your Yarra River sailing route however at this stage.
