LIVE: Echoes of Pink Floyd

Captivating from start to finish, Echoes of Pink Floyd’s latest tribute show took its Warrnambool audience on an epic journey of adversity, tragedy, depression, realization and ultimately resurrection.

Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the seminal album’s release, the seasoned musicians performed “The Wall” in its entirety.

Formed in 2009, Echoes of Pink Floyd comprises a six-piece band featuring Daniel Hunter on lead guitar; Jason Miller on drums; Mark Dole on bass; Paul Bindig on keyboards and synthesisers; Mark MacNab on rhythm and acoustic guitar and Matt Goodluck on lead vocals.
The Adelaide-based tribute has been touring nationally since 2014.

“The Wall” features the story of a famous musician called Pink who experiences so much tragedy in his life that he builds a metaphorical wall around himself to protect from further pain. He withdraws, shutting himself off from everyone around him. He is eventually brought to the realization that he has done this after picturing himself as a dictator and his audience as his army. He puts himself on trial, and forces his wall to crumble down, before reconnecting to the outside.

“The Wall”, which was the band’s eleventh studio album and released in 1979, was no doubt before its time. It was written before google and before political correctness but is a very accurate description of extreme mental health and its consequences.

It topped the US Billboard charts for 15 weeks and became the band’s second best-selling album and one of the best-selling albums of all time. It was adapted into a feature film and the single from the album, titled “Another Brick in The Wall, Part 2”, was the band’s first and only number-one single.

Echoes of Pink Floyd did this album justice from stratospheric guitars and sax, to haunting synthesizers, thundering bass and powerhouse percussion matched with an intense stage presence and amazing attention to detail. A stand out number for me was “Comfortably Numb” featuring an awe inspiring guitar threesome, while the intensity of “Mother” left the audience breathless.

“Another Brick in the Wall Part 1” was another highlight and provided the opportunity for young local dancers to take to the stage dressed in school uniforms.

Much more than a rock concert, this tribute showcases some very talented, inspiring musicians telling a masterpiece that explored the darkness of the mind and how someone overcame it.

And the icing on the cake, was an encore featuring a special selection of Pink Floyd’s greatest hits including crowd favourite “Wish You Were Here”.

Amazing show, breathtaking performances. Echoes of Pink Floyd continue to tour Victoria throughout the year.
