Sophisticated Dingo takes us through a track by track of their tasty AF EP

Everyone’s favorite puppies Sophisticated Dingo have dropped their grungy, tasty AF EP ‘Taste’s Like The Real Thing’ and it’s EVERYTHING you would expect from the guys, dirty cheeky and dope tunes.
To celebrate the EP, Lew from Sophisticated Dingo takes us through a track by track!
Beth
The front door to Casa de Dingaz. Your tour starts here. In our opinion it’s kind of like an overture to a grand theatre production. A little more cabaret with dinner and a show rather than a night on Broadway, but we gave it a good crack. This song was pieced together like a jigsaw puzzle rather than emerging in a grand moment of songwriting wizardry, but I remember being in a very good headspace when it came about. I’m enjoying listening to it now and appreciate the effort we put into the structure of this song.
Yuppies
We used to spend a bunch of time together in a bar on Chapel St. Mainly because Jimmy worked there most nights, and partly because I liked to accept the free drinks he could throw my way. Low and behold one night we were talking about how much fun it would be to have a big loud chanting song, if you will, and out popped the phrase “Yuppies, baby!” I suppose our surroundings played a big role in this song coming to be. It’s big loud fun and we have a ball playing it live.
Head Talk
This is a funny song. Not hilarious at all in its content, but for its place on the EP. I never thought of it as being any more than a stepping stone for our songwriting, perhaps it isn’t anything more than that. Jimmy always loved it from the get-go though and I’m happy he did because it plays pretty well with the rest of these songs and gave us a little bit of a leg up to go and do some of the cool things we have as a band. So if you like this song, you can thank Jimmy with a beer when you see him out and about, he’d love that.
Erin
This song came about around the same time as when we wrote “Beth” and “Yuppies”. Unlike those tunes that came together as a combination of ideas, “Erin” seemed to just emerge in one hit, almost by accident. It was recorded live in the living room/kitchen of a suburban home that gave it a really calm and steady vibe, at least I think so. It’s about as cliche as a song about ‘a love that could have been’ can be, but there is really something about it that I take a strong fancy too, as I do with the other songs written around this time.
Girls Who Don’t Care
By the time it came to track this song in the studio I think we were really hitting our stride in terms of playing together under the pressure of recording. We went all out adding a lot of things that we hadn’t necessarily thought about doing before, especially with the guitars and gang vocals. From 1:40 through to the end we are both just going for it, hammer, tongs and all. I think you can feel the passion in what we’re yelling about. The younger versions of ourselves are begging for you to please “JUST GIVE US A SHOT!”
Dreaming
End of the line. The final leg of the race. If you’re reading this, it’s too… ENOUGH. Alright this is a tune that seemed to just come together in an instant, without thinking. These are such great moments and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t constantly searching for that feeling whenever writing or jamming with Jimmy. But the more I try and recreate a moment that happened so perfectly the first time, the more diluted the subsequent imitations seem to be. The original moment maintains its accidental perfection and seems impossible to conjure up again out of thin air. Dreaming isn’t a perfect song but it felt pretty fantastic when we first played it and hearing it now we still love it, and bloody oath we enjoy playing it live on stage too.
