F*ckboys the Musical is heading to Melbourne

Fresh off a sold-out run and Critics’ Choice Award winner at the Orlando Fringe Festival in 2018, F*ckboys the Musical will make its international debut at this year’s Melbourne Fringe Festival 18-23 September. In this hilarious, one-act, original musical and dramatic comedy, four women will teach you the skills you need to take down the most dangerous predators plaguing the modern dating scene: the F*ckboy. We sat down with writer/director Savannah Cassidy Pederson for a quick chat.
Hi Savannah, thanks for chatting to Forte. We’re all dying to know the backstory, how did you get the idea for F*ckboys the Musical?
Well, long story short, I was head-over-heels in love with this boy, and he broke my heart. The relationship was struggling for awhile but I still found myself so in love with someone who unfortunately didn’t reciprocate those feelings. I had so many things I wanted to tell him after the fact, but couldn’t, since he jumped into a new relationship about a week after kicking me out of our house. So as a means of therapy, I took a week off work, sat down, and started writing.
Since a sold-out run, and taking away a critic’s choice award at the Orlando Fringe festival – what does it mean to you to be able to make an international debut in Melbourne?
I’ve always had a fascination with Australia as a place, even as a child, and the process for Melbourne Fringe happened so quickly it was almost as if we were meant to be here. I’m just so grateful and excited to even have this opportunity!
What are you hoping people take away from the musical?
The characters are all people you can identify in your own social circles, and the plot is not unfamiliar. Nearly everyone has gone through a heartbreak. The show is taking a satirical approach to my real heartbreak story, and I think the language and style of the show will really lend themselves to being able to tell it in an honest, and funny way.
How did you go about selecting the cast for this?
My producer, Aaron was instrumental in finding this fantastic cast. I was actually super amazed at how quickly we found our actors. Everything just sort of fell into place given people’s availability with work/school/other projects.
Can you talk us through the song writing process for this musical?
I wanted all the women to have at least one solo number in the show, that was very important to me. The lyrics and melody came before the chord structures, which came to life at the hands of our wonderful Music Director, Nishaa Carson. We would literally sit in her living room, drinking mimosas and writing songs. Pretty solid writing process, if I say so myself.
Just to finish up, do you recommend boys coming to see this or is that a no-go?
Oh no, the boys NEED to see this show! Please do not think this is a show bashing men in any way. It’s so much more than that. And hey, you might learn something about yourself along the way…
Check it out from September 18-23 at the Fringe Hub @ Lithuanian Club, 44 Errol St., North Melbourne.
