Attonbitus are genius indie-pop madmen. The Adelaide three-piece construct intriguing and dense rhythms that propel them in a wayward frenzy—an exuberant sprawl of genres. In celebration of their most recent and eclectic new single ‘Next Time Around’ from their forthcoming debut album David Street (out July 27), they’ve given Forté a guide to Adelaide’s music community…
So the Adelaide music community is kind of like a big family; everybody knows each other and gives as much support as they can give. A lot of the community gains influence from one band to another; well that’s at least how I perceive it.
From the beginning of my quest for a career in music and forming the band Attonbitus, I gained a lot of experience at local venues and a lot influence from the bands around me. Along with Adelaide’s most supportive venues and influential bands; these are my suggestions as a guide to the Adelaide music scene.
The Crown and Anchor
Gigs every night and hosting probably the best of Adelaide’s alternative crowd. An edgy venue filled with a big family of the Adelaide alternative music community. Going to this venue you’re guaranteed to see all the great acts kicking out mad parties in the band room. Also, it’s also known to get a little loose, so if your planning to let yourself get a little rough around the edges this is definitely the pub for you.
Another pub for the oddities is just down the road from the Crown and anchor seems to act as an older sibling. Hosting some of Adelaide’s best acts, this pub warm community, and cosy nature will hook you in. Probably Rundall streets home base for new upcoming local acts.
The Grace Emily
For a bit of the Country vibes, this pub is where it’s at. Hosting the Billy Bobs BBQ Jams, this pub will pack out every Monday and with it comes most of the Adelaide music community. Known for its versatility, it brings together the full Adelaide music family from the alternative to the mainstream. If your ever out in Adelaide on a Monday night and looking for something to do, this is where you need to be.
Tucked down an alley off Hindley street, this secret little gem is known to pack shows for the strangest nights about the Adelaide scene. Think the first time I visited this venue it reminded me of an experience I had at Rainbow Serpent Festival. Packed with psytrance and psych bands, it’s a venue that is truly out of this world.
The Jade Monkey
This venue has been around for quite a while, after moving from its original location off Rundall Mall, The Jade monkey is known for its warm and alluring nature. In association with music SA, you’re assured to see most of Adelaide’s predominant artist about this venue. Not to mention the band room of this venue has some serious class; most acts you catch at the Jade on a night out, tend to be of the finest quality.
The band I gained the most influence during my time starting was Jungle City; a team of Jovial country bumpkins from Alice Springs who are engaging hard rock and genuine attitude just drew me in. Around this gang of brothers, the Adelaide music scene works somewhat like a country town. We all know each other and we all stick together, but most of all, we jam until the moon becomes the sun.
When it comes to psych hooks, and blooming harmonies. These guys don’t disappoint. Even after shows, these guys put up a riot in the jam room. Surrounded by the swell records family, you’re guaranteed to see these guys about festivals and amongst the soothing vibrant culture of the Randall Street community.
If you’re looking for a suka punch of heavy blues and cheeky naughty boy grins, these two scallywags get you bouncing. Probably the biggest and most energetic sound for a two-piece. A part from the music, guitarist Luke Marsh also owns and runs his own custom made guitar company “Mantra”. Being quite close friends with these two, I was very fortunate to have Luke custom make me a guitar and amp after my Gibson Les Paul was stolen. Big thanks to Mantra for me out during some tough times.
Dr Piffle & The Burlap Band
If you looking for a strong uplifting community of crusty punks this group will win your hearts over. Any gig this crew covers you’re guaranteed a huge crowd of lovable loose rootsy folk kicking up a storm and continuing to mosh even after the power has gone out. Busting out packed shows in allies and festivals at your local park, these guys will blow you away.
Aiden Jazzy Jones
Accompanying Dr piffle is also a gentle and smiley sole who will melt your heart. This guy time after time continues to send chills up my spine. Seeing him perform at a local Adelaide coffee shop and or busking around the Adelaide central markets, you’re guaranteed to fall in love with this beautiful soul
Now if you’re looking for Adelaide’s quirky side the wonderful Nicole O’Rielley with her project Frankly will jolt you with wistful sarcastic humour and voice that will blow you away. Guaranteed to laugh and sit in awe this cheeky girl will entertain and remind you that you’re ok with being a little strange. Even talking with her after shows you’re guaranteed to fall into a joyful hysteria; Nicole in person is one funny, enigmatic and charming personality.
This is the perfect guide if you’re also heading to the Adelaide Beer & BBQ (read about this here).
